Monday Morning Reads — June 25

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a great weekend!

Certainly not worthy of top billing, but I’d like to remind everyone that this Clueless monologue exists.

The children who were forcibly separated from their parents at the border by the United States government are all over the country now, in Michigan and Maryland, in foster homes in California and shelters in Virginia, in cold, institutional settings with adults who are not permitted to touch them or with foster parents who do not speak Spanish but who hug them when they cry.”

Team Deal is lining up behind Casey Cagle.

Delta irritated me when they dropped the NRA discount, but this redeemed them in my eyes. Pitbulls are no longer allowed on flights as “emotional support” animals.

Thai police officer’s video about Georgia’s new hands-free law went viral.

South Fulton is the first city in the nation to have a criminal justice system run entirely by black women, including one of our contributors, LaDawn Jones.

SCOTUS will have orders at 9:30 this morning (from their 6/21 conference) and then opinions at 10:00. Six argued cases are outstanding….here’s a synopsis of each of those cases from Amy Howe.

Delta is wrong on this one. A properly trained service dog presents an incredibly low risk of attacking another person or animal. This is even true for pit bulls, a number of whom are serving as companions for veterans suffering from PTSD. The issue isn’t pit bulls on airplanes the issue is that every Tom, Dick, and Harry is trying to fly their pet for free by claiming they need an emotional support animal. If you want to cut down on incidents, require proof the animal has completed service animal training offered by an accredited organization and require the passenger… Read more »

I believe in no animals in the passenger section of a plane. Perhaps a special section for service animals and their owners. I do not want to sit next to a cat (even in a cage) or a dog on a 4 hour flight. (I have two dogs and a cat living at my house).

How are people with allergies managed?

The problem with that approach is twofold:
First, the Air Carrier Access Act prohibits discrimination against people with mental or physical disabilities, this includes allowing for service animals. So you can’t just outright ban service animals from planes.

Second, the notion of creating a special class of seating just for owners with service animals isn’t cost efficient for airlines.

We’ve long needed a better system for credentialing and identifying trained service animals, the airplane issues have simply highlighted that.

Being best for business is all well and good, but it is not the goal, it is the means to a goal. The goal is improving the lives of citizens. If we lose sight of that we are wasting our time with making life better for businesses in the state:

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
Improve health, education , and infrastructure and the jobs will follow?
Or,
Increase jobs and healthcare, education, and infrastructure inprovement will follow?

Also HB386, passed in 2012, put a lot of small rural towns in financial hardship.
“H.B. 386, passed by the state legislature in 2012. The law replaced an annual car tax with a one-time title tax, which is paid when a car is bought. It also eliminated sales tax on energy used in manufacturing, and expanded a program that allowed the agriculture industry to avoid paying sales tax on a variety of products.”

Which makes more sense: To create a whole chicken out of thin air, or just create an embryo out of thin air? The egg obviously comes first.

It’s not either/or, you have to do both of course. But with our top business ranking and bottom quality of life rankings we are out of balance.
I’m just saying- just taking care of businesses isn’t going to automatically take care of the rest. We have to drive that improvement too.

First, they denied due process to migrants:

Considering Will’s former employer wanted to load immigrants on a bus and drive them back across the border, I can’t say this is the most atrocious immigration policy I’ve ever heard of.

To head Sally, Noway, and beta bro off at the pass:
Aliens, even aliens whose presence in this country is unlawful, have long been recognized as ‘persons’ guaranteed to due process of law by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.

The moment the chicken evolved from its ancestors, it laid an egg to keep the chicken evolution going.
So it was the chicken that came first.

Kamela Harris proposing the elimination of ICE is as stupid as Stacey Abrams advocating eradication of the reliefs on Stone Mountain. FWIW, I’m closer to former conservatives viewpoints on illegal immigration than I am mainstream Democratic view. Implement E-verify. Spend a few billion on a wall or surveillance where it/they would be most effective. No path to citizenship for adults that entered the US illegally. (But on the other hand, a path to legal status for most, and certainly a path to citizenship for DACA people.) Increase restrictions on visas that may be used to obtain US citizenship of children… Read more »

What would be hysterical is if his trade war ended the gun industry in America. They already are in bad financial shape.
