Ben Haynes, Democratic candidate for Gwinnett County Sheriff, has also responded to the announcement of Gwinnett County Republican Sheriff Butch Conway’s retirement:
Today, longtime Gwinnett County Republican Sheriff, Butch Conway, announced his retirement. Upon this announcement, Ben Haynes, a veteran law enforcement professional and Democratic candidate for Sheriff released the following statement:
“The retirement of Sheriff Butch Conway opens the door for Gwinnett County voters to have a clean slate and elect a Sheriff that will bring integrity to the Sheriff’s Office. I’m running for Sheriff to be the needed change and end the failed policies and practices which have damaged the relationship between the community and the Sheriff’s Office, undermined the reputation of the Sheriff’s Office, and disrespected the taxpayers of Gwinnett County.
If elected, I will utilize my 25+ years of decorated law enforcement experience to deliver serious reforms. My agenda prioritizes the ensuring of humane conditions in the county jail, improving training and conduct policies for Sheriff’s Office personnel, and respecting the civil and human rights of all. I will create a model office that will lead the fight against human trafficking, serious sexual crimes, and family and gun violence. I plan to implement a progressive inmate education and career training program as well as provide high quality mental health and substance abuse treatment programs. The focus on innovative inmate rehabilitation programs will take precedence as I work to reduce recidivism. I will appropriately safeguard department resources which will be utilized on the most pressing of public safety concerns.
I look forward to the opportunity to continue to share my progressive vision for the Sheriff’s Office with Gwinnett County voters ahead of the May 19th Democratic Primary.”
