Kirkland Carden Responds to Retirement of Gwinnett Co. Sheriff

Kirkland Carden, candidate for Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, had some harsh words in response to the announcement that Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway will be retiring and not seeking re-election in 2020.

Carden stated:

“The man who forced our county into 287(g) and invited the leader of an SPLC-identified hate group to represent his office has announced that he won’t run again. Sheriff Conway’s decision comes after months—even years—of community activism and outrage against his extreme partisanship and unethical practices. Many of his decisions have led to damage to the county’s reputation, a loss of trust between the community and the Sheriff’s office, serious litigation, and Department of Justice investigations.

This is yet more proof that Gwinnett is rapidly changing. As the diversity and ideology of our citizen’s progresses, so too does that of our leaders.

His announcement is a victory for the people of Gwinnett. I look forward to Gwinnett having a new Sheriff that meaningfully reforms the office, restores integrity, and doesn’t come under DoJ investigation.”
