Potential Challenger to Perdue Announces IF Abrams is Out

Teresa Tomlinson, former Mayor of Columbus, issued the following email announcement about her forming an exploratory committee for a potential run for United States Senate against Sen. David Perdue:

This is an exciting time for Georgia Democrats. Not only are we on the verge of flipping our state blue, but the road to a Democratic majority in the Senate also goes straight through Georgia. There is unprecedented enthusiasm for new leadership, but significant obstacles remain in our path. The stakes have never been higher.

I believe that the US government is the greatest civic achievement the world has ever known, but the current power structure in Washington has corrupted it. Some corrupt it by seeking power to enrich themselves. Others corrupt it by bending it to advance narrow ideological objectives that benefit the few, not the many. Then there are those that corrupt it in the most cynical way possible, which is to use our government to divide us.

We can do better, and that starts with Georgia. We can elect a Senator who is ready to take on this entrenched power structure so that government serves the people once again.

Democrats in our state owe a debt of gratitude to Stacey Abrams for taking on an entrenched power structure right here in Georgia. In fact, many of us believe she rightly won her race for Governor but that power structure deprived her of the office.

As we give Stacey the space she needs to make the decision about her next chapter, I have begun to lay the foundation for a run for U.S. Senate myself should she decide not to run for Senate. I wanted you to know that I have filed paperwork today to establish an exploratory committee so that preparation can continue.

We need to begin laying the groundwork now to ensure a Democrat wins this race in 2020. That’s why I have filed for an exploratory committee. It’s why having your support today is so important, and why I have to ask.
Throughout my career, I’ve knocked down a few bullies who got in the way of justice. As Mayor, I proved we can have good government that gets results and provides a framework for prosperity for our citizens. And I want you to know that if I decide to run for Senate, my commitment will be to work every day to make sure the U.S. government serves ALL Georgians and ALL Americans.
