Morning Reads for Monday, January 14, 2019

Today feels a little surreal. Even as spouse. And I know I can’t be the only one feeling that way. You work for months and months, you go to every meeting imaginable (and unimaginable), you put signs up, you take signs down, you wave signs, you make call after call. And then election day is here. It’s pretty much the longest day of your life. If you are lucky enough to make it through the Primary, you suffer through the second longest day of your life MANY MONTHS later. And then you win. Or you don’t.

But, if you do win, you get to a surreal Monday morning in January. And you wake up feeling grateful. And humbled. And nervous. And excited. And grateful. And humbled.

Has anyone heard any reason as to why we would want or need a barcode on a ballot?
I haven’t (yet).

Will Durant
Will Durant

Every ballot should be free of any “code”. We need assurance at this point that they reflect exactly how they were marked. Any trust lent to our officials has been spent, including by the guy who is being inaugurated today after overseeing his own election. As his assurances while SoS were proven to be worth the proverbial warm bucket. I have already emailed my rep and senator and urge others to do the same.

Dave Bearse
Dave Bearse

I e-mailed Speaker Ralston, Rep Barry Fleming and Senator Bruce Thompson in addition to my Rep and Senator machine marked ballots.

They shouldn’t even be considered until the cause of the 100,000 ballot undercount in November 2016 is determined and made public. Election officials that can’t or won’t figure out what went wrong with 16 year old election machine candidate selection technology should not be specifying 2019 technology.

Same as any business, for easy reference. A unique ballot identifier in a machine-readable format.

“Unique ballot identifier”. That’s probably not appropriate for a ballot.

County and precinct ID, a number, maybe how and when delivered. Bookkeeping stuff.

All of which could be handled just as easily with OCR if need be.

Let me get this straight. This goes for news in the liberal media….Folks that are pro gun rights in the US are somehow siding with the Russians. I just want to cry horsesh– once again. Sure Russians want the US armed to the teeth. Remember the liberal dweebs hated Reagan worse than the Russians and LOVED Gorabchev. Reagan was the problem we were told….Gosh this gets tiresome…Here they go again. If I want a gun and support the NRA that is somehow pro Russia and a blow against Trump. Hogwash. You call this a Goverment shutdown in Washington? Mother Nature says “hold my beer”.

Will Durant
Will Durant

It will be interesting to see where the shutdown goes as Trump migrates further down the approval polls:
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings

Even Rasmussen now has him at 43% with the aggregate heading down to the political Mendosa line of 40%. Now the bravado of “I will own the shutdown” has devolved to: “Nancy and Cryin’ Chuck can end the Shutdown in 15 minutes. At this point it has become their, and the Democrats, fault!” It appears the attention span of the American people may exceed Warhol’s 15 minute mark after all.

Gregs
Gregs

Trump is not playing to an audience of the American public. His audience is the MAGA zombies. His approval rating in zombieland is well over 90%. Even when the shutdown starts to really hurt, Trump’s supporters won’t turn on him. He’s immune from public opinion.

However, there are several Republican senators who are not immune because they have to run in two years. The only way this shutdown ends is for maximum pr damage to be done to the vulnerable senators.

Gregs, great post. 90% approval among the non socialists!! So who are the zombies!!??

Looks like Polosi better come up with some mula. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/immigration/january_2019/voters_want_strong_borders_say_wall_is_not_immoral “Most voters continue to favor strongly controlled borders and reject House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s charge that it is immoral for the United States to build a border wall.“

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

Also from Rasmussen:

“The president’s overall job approval rating has been falling since his Oval Office address last week calling for enhanced border security and the building of a wall to help stop illegal immigration. This is his lowest daily approval rating in nearly a year.”

That tracks with other polling showing that Americans are predominately blaming Trump for the shutdown.

Yes, the best argument is that it’s a waste of money, like the bridge to Nowhere, and that we can spend that money in ways that actually solve the problems, not fulfill an oversimplified campaign fantasy. Simple version: It’s Money for Nothing. But now it’s also the Wall vs. All of Government. Which is why the polls are shifting. It’s easy for people to see that no one thing is worth a collapse of our government. And that’s what people are starting to see and fear. Actual weak governance. And of course it will be easier (and more accurate) to… Read more »

“Immoral” also doesn’t work well because people’s closely-held beliefs, like “right” and “wrong”, are virtually immutable. So you don’t confront those beliefs, you raise competing beliefs that you know they believe in (like fiscal responsibility, or keeping all of our government strong).
