I would like to see the number of crop and loan insurance claims approved by USDA this summer in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois Wisconsin and Indiana as compared to prior years.
This is antidotal, but with the number of intense storms producing tornadoes that whipped thru the upper Midwest this summer, my cousins (on 5 different farms) filed for multiple claims on the soy, beets, sweet corn, alfalfa and rye fields, plus the lost of an empty grain silo and a corn crib (each part of USDA loan programs). The lone rye field is a total lost, the corn is not sellable for humans but can be salvaged as cow feed, the beet fileds were waterlogged & they won’t know until harvet it they are sellable, become pig feed or a full loss. The soy and alfalfa are partial losses. It normally takes months or after harvest to approve any type of crop loss payment
So far USDA has signed off on full coverage of the whole fields for all the soy and all the beets. (both are being hit by tariffs). The sweet corn is pending harvest and change of price due to usage (normal claim). The rye and alfalfa are being challenged – the rye was laying flat on the ground, sections in each of the alfalfa fields washed away (not normal). They are also challenging the silo (do they ‘need’ a new silo, was it still being used etc… not normal). The crib is pending for pricing.
What is questionable is the soy and beets were worst case either particle or change of use losses. Yet the field that you know beyond a doubt is a loss (and still has a high fungible price) is being questioned. Crop insurance falls under normal budgeting for the USDA. If lost in a weather event covered by FEMA, it can also fall under any funds congress allots to the state (a lot of the pig farms in North Carolina which would have gotten an aid package, but have lose of livestock because of the flooding from Florence are going to be covered this way). The farm aid packages listed in the linked article as ‘not being as bad as expected’ are in a different funding stream, which is likely to be questioned by congress and the ress. The lower the number the better.

SurveyUSA interviewed 1,250 adults from the state of Georgia Oct. 3 through Oct. 8. Of the adults, 1,027 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 655 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the Nov. 6 general election. This research was conducted online.
Abrams, who is African-American, leads 17:1 among black voters, who represent 30 percent of the likely electorate, according to SurveyUSA’s modeling. White voters, who make up 64 percent of SurveyUSA’s electorate, back Kemp nearly 3:1.”
