Georgia has “shattered” all-time voter registration record

Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced Wednesday that Georgia has shattered the all-time voter registration record with over 6,915,000 active and inactive voters on the rolls. Kemp expects the total number to break 7,000,000 voters at any moment as counties continue to process forms received by yesterday’s deadline.

The voter registration deadline was October 9, 2018 for the November 6, 2018 election.

Georgia’s population is roughly 10.43 million, based on the 2017 census. which means that Georgia’s percentage of the population registered to vote could come close to 70%.

“Despite what you hear or read, the numbers are clear. While outside agitators disparage this office and falsely attack us, we have kept our head down and remained focused on ensuring secure, accessible, and fair elections for all voters. The fact is that it has never been easier to register to vote and get engaged in the electoral process in Georgia, and we are incredibly proud to report this new record,” Kemp said in a statement issued via press release Wednesday.

Voter turnout in Georgia is predicted to reach levels of the 2008 presidential election and activists from all corners of the political spectrum have been working to get Georgians across the to register for months.

Absentee by mail voting is already underway and the number of absentee ballots requested across Georgia is up 130% from 2014.

Early in-person voting runs October 15, 2018 through November 2, 2018. In all 159 counties, the polls will be open on Saturday, October 27, 2018.

How many of these new voters know who their U. S. Senators are? Their U. S. Representative? Their State Senator? Their State Representative?

The 4 in my office do. I made them pull up the sample ballot for their districts and told them to look up the web page of every candidate. If they are going to live here, they need to vote and they need to know which candidate will support what is important to them and their future. Plus if they didn’t vote they couldn’t complain about any branch of government, including the meter maids.

The cynic in me has to ask how many of the old voters could do the same. How many just vote for incumbents unless they have been caught strangling a (bulldog?) puppy on the 50-yard line during a Falcons’ game? How many just vote straight red or blue regardless of the candidate? How many just vote the way their preacher, priest, shaman, tells them to vote sometimes based upon a single issue?

How many know what the 12th Amendment does? How many can tell me how many jelly beans are in this jar? I feel like there should be some kind of test to determine if you’re allowed to vote. Maybe call it a literacy test or something like that. #sarcasm

I’m not saying that the electorate is stupid, but, going back to 1950 in the race between Claude Pepper vs. George Smathers: ”Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy.”

What with Kemp’s shenanigans trying to close polling places and purging the voter rolls, it’s going to be hard enough for some voters just to get to cast a ballot at all, regardless if they know anything about the candidates or issues.
So..
If your vote is challenged, you can ask for a PROVISIONAL BALLOT.
Do it.

“outside agitators”? Use of that loaded term is all the proof I need that the race is teetering. With a month to go there’s still time for “uppity”.
