Good morning from tybee island!

The weather here in NW Atlanta is just beautiful today.

Ellynn

It was beastly during in the week. The humidity was well over 80%.

Ellynn

You got to go thru the obstacle course around the draw bridges… The close down a lane some times between 9-5 during the week just to let you know.

Benevolus
Benevolus

No problems for us at the drawbridge.
We wanted to go to the Green Truck Pub in Sav for burgers but it was closed for vacation!
Hot, but breezy on the beach. 🙂
Watched some guys net fishing from the north beach/river channel. Their first haul was 13 lbs of shrimp,a few blue crabs, a couple of small sharks, a catfish, and several small fish. That was fun to watch. They threw everything back except the shrimp.
Big storm passed through Sat afternoon. Thankfully it wasn’t a sharknado.

Ellynn

I could of told you Green Truck was closed for vacation if you asked. A lot of shopped close for a week in September after the summer holiday and before the October festival season starts. They do a lot equipment upgrades.

I think the Senate Repubs are backed into a corner, where they have to hold a vote on Kav even if they know they don’t have the votes. Then they can blame it on Jeff Flake if they lose.
And it may be a roll of the dice, but in the calculus, they may think that they’re going to take heavy losses in midterms anyways, so they have to do their version of their best, so cut the losses and get Kav on the Court at all costs.

Caroline
Caroline

The woman that says she knows about the rape train is going on TV this weekend. I guess they could vote on him today and put him on the supreme court but then they are going to have to deal with massive fallout next week one month before an election.

Yeah, I agree. They certainly act like they are going to lose both the house and the senate in November. However they are not thinking about the long term damage this is going to do to the GOP.

jbgotcha
jbgotcha

I disagree. The GOP is acting like a party that never expects to lose power. There is a larger plan at play here. I think they may be relying on the unsecure voting machines in a bunch of states to allow vote manipulation. If that doesn’t work, they may refuse to seat the new congress in the event Democrats win by saying the Chinese “hacked” the election. We are in deep, uncharted territory. We may have to flood Washington, DC. I’m ready.

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

the long term damage this is going to do to the GOP
.
Bless your heart.
.
Donald Trump was caught on tape openly bragging about committing sexual assault. he still got elected President and the Republicans who talked about how they could never look their wives and daughters in the eyes fell in line behind him.
.
This isn’t about voting machines or vast conspiracies. It’s a structural issue. A small percentage of the country’s population is disproportionately represented in the US Senate. People have been predicting the demise of the GOP since 2008. It hasn’t happened. It’ll never happen.

Caroline
Caroline

I never said demise. I said long term damage. Alex Castellanos has said that right now their strategy is failing. You can’t depend on rural areas with declining populations to win every election. You have to expand the electorate which the GOP is not doing. Playing to the far right 20% of the country is not a long term strategy. A democracy is not going to stand for minority rule for very long. Either all this is going to destabliize our country or we are going to lose democracy.

I don’t think I can do anything about the congressional makeup. My wife and I downsized not too long ago and I now live in the 10th District “represented” by Jody Hice. I’m neither a Democrat or Republican at this point. I am vehemently anti-Trump however, the only wall I want built is Jefferson’s between church and state. I am for most anyone willing to curb this administration’s agenda.

Caroline
Caroline

All I can say is if you are represented by Jody Hice is I’m sorry to hear that.

Sally Forth

Caroline, do you hear yourself?! Definition of “rape train”: A group of combatants allied together for the purpose of pooling manpower and resources to wreak havoc on common enemies. It is a war term, is also used in a game Call of Duty, and has urban use online when a person is about to get owned.

If you really want to use the term, it would accurately apply to what the hate-filled lunatics now running the Democrat Party are trying to do to Judge Kavanaugh.

Caroline
Caroline

This is what Julie Swetnik said. The FBI is checking out her claims. You can rant and rave about that all you want but really the GOP can’t talk with too much credibility on this since they didn’t want the FBI to check out any of the claims in the first place.

Sally Forth
Sally Forth

Please give us the cv of Ms. Swetnik, so we can figure out why any client of the porn lawyer is a good character witness. Men lie. Women lie. People lie. Since nobody knows who or what this new person is, please enlighten us. I do not rant and rave about anything – you must have me mistaken for one of the paid Dem hell-raisers who have been defiling our nation’s Capitol. FYI, it wasn’t that the GOP didn’t want the FBI to check out not just one person’s accusations — they wanted and did have the FBI do yet… Read more »

Caroline
Caroline

I would definitely say that is a multi paragraph rant. These accusations were never dealt with on the other background investigations. So your argument there is pointless. Dr. Blake asked Feinstein to keep her name confidential and she did. Dr. Blake was apparently mistaken thinking that the GOP would do the right thing and investigate her claims without all this. And when you start on Soros conspiracy theories, it says more about your rant than anything else.

Sally Forth
Sally Forth

A conversation dealing with facts is not a “rant.” Back to the dictionary, Caroline. 🙂 About Soros, the reality of this billionaire’s manipulation of politics in several countries, not just our’s, is well reported in Britain and the US , not just a “theory.” Here’s one article to start with: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/mar/7/george-soros-gave-246-million-partners-womens-marc/ You can also check government websites for contributions directly to candidates and political organizations of this Hungarian’s choosing. He was run out of Hungary, went to England and was run out of that country also. Lucky us – we now have him in New York. Do a little research.

Caroline
Caroline

Sally if all you have is Soros conspiracy theories then you truly need some help. I genuinely feel sorry for you. The fact that Soros owns stock in some companies means zilch. Lots of people own stock in companies. Does that mean they control them? Republicans have jumped the shark.

Caroline
Caroline

Well, apparently there are not the votes there for Kavanaugh and an FBI investigation is going to be done and after that possibly a vote.

bethebalance
bethebalance

I don’t know if the investigation actually gets done. There’s a lot of risk.
It might be easier just to say this has been an awful Democratic conspiracy to ruin Kav’s life, and Kav doesn’t want his family exposed to such Democratic badness any more, and that he is withdrawing, but Repubs need to go to polls to ensure they can still nominate a conservative to the Court.

Caroline
Caroline

He very well might withdraw. He certainly seemed to be dead set against the FBI checking into these claims. I don’t know how that works for conservatives going to the polls after the same people picked Kavanaugh. I seriously do not understand their investment in Kavanaugh especially with all his problems. I guess it’s all about “owning the libs” or some such nonsense.

MattMD_actual
MattMD_actual

Considering he would likely be as far to the right as Thomas, I think it is clear why the vast majority of Republicans are all in on this one.

His appointment would make Roberts the swing vote.

Caroline

Yeah, but it’s not like they can’t find another one.

They next likely nominee would be Barrett. Much more conservative the Kavanagh, and extremely unknown in her ruling. Only on the bench a year.

ScottNAtlanta

I dont think Barrett would get the nod. In the first round she did not get on very well with Trump…like not at all

Caroline

I’m with Scott on this one. I don’t think Trump would nominate Barrett because she’s a woman and she didn’t go to what he considers the right schools.

MattMD_actual
MattMD_actual

I don’t know, I think this guy is such an ideologue that he might very well hang on for another week. I agree with what I think you are saying, that at what point is it worth putting your family through more turmoil? Getting a SCOTUS nomination is such a crapshoot that it has to hard for someone like Kavanaugh to walk away from.

Caroline
Caroline

He doesn’t care about his family. If he did, he would not have said yes to going on the supreme court. Of course, apparently he’s gotten away with things his entire life so I’m guessing that he thought he would again.

In hindsight bringing in those high school female basketball players and all those other women sure didn’t seem like such a good idea. I have to say though all that theater makes me think that he and someone else probably knew this was a problem, knew his history and thought bringing young women into the hearing would help.

MattMD_actual
MattMD_actual

I believe Kavanaugh does love his family very much. He is also highly driven and he wants to see this through, even if it ends up taxing them. I grew up around some highly privileged Catholic school boys and I could tell that they have this aura of entitlement. It is helpful to remember that elite alums also stick together, hence letter signed by the 65. I think he is very smart but he also partied very hard in his youth and he forgot some of the things he did. He is clearly overcompensating by his beneficent treatment of women… Read more »

I’m sure the GOP gave some assurances to him that it was going to be an easy nomination. However Mitch McConnell told Trump not to nominate him because he had “problems” and I just read that the ABA had downgraded him 12 years ago too after some interviews they did with judges and coworkers naming some of the problems we’ve seen in his nomination process. So at least to some they knew of some of these things.

FFS, Brett Kavanaugh isn’t being lynched. At worst, he’s being denied the opportunity to upgrade his current lifetime appointment on the prestigious DC Circuit for a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court. Regardless of whether he’s confirmed or not, he’ll still be rich, still be well respected in conservative legal circles, still be the same beer-loving carpool dad he was before he was nominated. Which raises the point- why are there so many politicians (I won’t say Republicans moreso often than Dems even if it were true) that base their professional judgments solely on their own personal (selfish)experiences? Like the homophobe who says it’s OK to be gay only after their daughter comes out? Or the anti-weed person who wants to decriminalize only when their grandson has seizures?… Read more »

You know it’s not like the people hosting the party are going to say hey, we’re having a rape train this weekend. The only way you might know there was going to be one would be if you went and saw the guys who were running it there.

Balance, what does your post accomplish in terms of finding any fault or evidence against Kavanaugh? Any wizards on here want to give ONE SHRED of substantiated evidence that shows this guy is not qualified other than he is not a left wing radical? He has no problem finding friends, coworkers and the law profession that have worked with him for decades that attest to his character and high standards. Did you notice one legal question posed by liberals at this confirmation hearing or just personal attacks going back some 40 years ago? Now why is it that liberals interested… Read more »

Did you notice one legal question posed by liberals at this confirmation hearing or just personal attacks going back some 40 years ago?

The hearing was convened for the express purpose of exploring the sexual assault allegations, moron.

You mean the post where I easily rebutted your weak attempt to discredit actual evidence? Don’t confuse your “logic” with facts or evidence.

Or that the law and facts must operate in tandem with each other.
I’d explain but it’s pointless.
Like your whining.

Sorry, carry on. Lord only knows how many times I’ve done it. As I’ve stated with certain people I just skim, but with the opening sentence: “Lifetime appointment is a strawman.” Face, meet palm.

Good try folks. Ask yourself why many of you believe folks that make up unsubstantiated over the top stories every time there is a conservative Supreme Court nominee, yet support folks enthusiastically that are proven sexual predators and that includes abuse of 21- year old interns under an Oval Office Desk, cigar twirlings, groping of other women in the Oval Office and raping women and telling them to ” put a little ice on it honey”. Supporting folks so corrupt they lost their law licenses, required an entire White House Bimbo eruption team lead by the power hungry wife who… Read more »

I think there is still time for Hillary to run again. Caroline I know you love polls but here is one for Hillary. An all time low. You would figure after the book and her excuse making tour that would have helped…

Do you think this applies to the entire liberal agenda and the nonstop hateful attacks on anything and anyone they disagree with?
