Morning Reads for Tuesday, September 25

Good morning! I don’t know how you numb the pain of living in this figurative lobster pot, but actual lobsters are dealing with it with the help of some kind bud.

You Libs ok with these tactics?

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

Yes. I’m sure there is a very large chunk of Republicans that are also ok with it because Ted Cruz is a prick.

To quote Lindsey Graham:
“If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you.”

Andrew C. Pope

Ted Cruz is the biggest douchebag in Washington DC, a town known for its high concentration of massive douchebags. While I’m too polite to tell him to go f*^% himself, I would almost certainly let my dog poop in his yard (and not pick it up), fart as I walked by him on an airplane, and donate heavily to his opponent who, it should be noted, isn’t a douchebag.
.
His dad killed JFK for chrissakes. That’s reason enough to ostracize the guy.

I didn’t read the story, but I disagree with the tactic of anything beyond respectful conversation during a meal. But folks can do “citizen lobbying” and approach and converse, or even sit at the neighboring table and hold up a message. I think having to be available to the public is part of being a public servant. But I think the respectful approach, besides being more ethical, is also more effective in several ways.

A walk-by farting during dinner.
Ha!

Andrew C. Pope

The problem with farting in Cruz’ general vicinity is that Ted Cruz looks like the physical manifestation of a fart. The guy just looks like he smells like a bag full of moldy onions.

Also, why is this restaurant allowing the Zodiac Killer to sit among innocent, likely unarmed, patrons.

PS the airline steward technical term for airplane-aisle-farting is “crop dusting”

Back when the Vogtle reactor expansion was proposed I wrote the PSC and my state reps opposing it. My reason was history proved that GA Power and the Southern Co. could not manage a project like this. I stated that since there were no safe guards in the contracts it would go way over budget and not be completed on time just like the last reactor project. What did the PSC do, passed it anyway. To make it more of an insult to GA citizens they allowed rate payers to be charged in advanced for it. I guess you could… Read more »

Because I don’t know, can someone tell me how these cost over runs are allowed on something like this or any gov’t project? Cost over runs that double or triple the original price of projects? Why should this be allowed as “the cost” of doing business? Seriously…

Raleigh
Raleigh

Because GP’s lobbying and campaign contributions allowed them to get a contract that deferred all the risk away from them onto rate payers.

bethebalance
bethebalance

To answer on the most basic level, all the risk of changes and adjustments to the work is embedded in the contract, and yes, having ratepayers pay the costs means GP is less accountable. Again, not my area of expertise, but when there are cost over-runs that are disproportionate to the size of the project and the known risks, it appears that the initial publicized costs were intentionally low-balled to make the deal more politically palatable. I imagine there may be info out there about this?

Ellynn
Ellynn

To expand on this for Norway First it’s not a government project, it is government regulated as all reactors are, and it has some funding by federal loans which have a define set of building and inspection regs and standards depending on which cabinet level budget funds the loans. The owners are the three power companies. They would have a construction firm/owner contract, even if Southern Company is the main contractor since the other owners are not. Think of it as a huge public private project. A contract can be a estimate or bid price allowing full change orders, or… Read more »

That was T & M “get it done”, using known design and units, unit price & labor plus 7% of cost, with a scaled time bonus.

NoParty4Me

Yes, ratepayers get stuck with the bill while Southern Co. shareholders get dividends and stock value goes up. Shareholders of a publicly traded co. should shoulder most of these costs, not the poor consumers who were sold ‘cheaper, reliable, environmentally friendly’ electricity.

I blame Stan Wise…he generally was the one who pushed these things through.
It also didnt help the Westinghouse went bankrupt well into the process

Benevolus
Benevolus

There has been a mess with the contractors on that job too. I think the original contractor was fired due to the delays and overruns, then Westinghouse took over, then they hired a couple other companies to help them manage it all, then Westinghouse went bankrupt, so I think one or both of the other contractors took over.
.
Plus, there were extra protests and lawsuits because this was approved shortly after the Fukishima disaster and many wanted to try to make sure this design was safe.

Jack Fitz
Jack Fitz

The project will be finished and a nice 11th hour letter from the DOE saying “the $6B in federal loans will need to be repaid promptly if the project is abandoned” sure did help to get those muni’s on board. A little push from the eye-glasses wearing former Gov of Texas sure helped to move things along.

For all of bluster conservatives and Republicans give about being fiscally responsible and economic stewards, they will ALWAYS be SO MUCH EASIER to “lobby” than Democrats.

Raleigh
Raleigh

You can try to blame this on Republicans if you want but when Hatch and Vogtle were built in the 70’s with the same mismanagement and overruns guess who was in power in Georgia. Yes, that would be the Democrats. All Republicans can be blamed for on this is being just as stupid as Democrats.

Benevolus

Many (if not most) Dems back then were actually Republicans in all but name who didn’t have the courage to associate themselves with the party of Lincoln. They were called Blue Dog Democrats. It wasn’t until 130 years after The Late Unpleasantness that they began to change their affiliation. But whatever Party they were in, they were always conservative.

Sonny Perdue was originally elected as a Democrat in 1990 before becoming a Republican in 1998. . The first estimate for the project was less than $7B. It was up to nearly $15B when it was authorized for construction. My recollection is that according to a RAND corporation study the average cost overrun for nuclear plant construction is 150% , so if this project is average, it’s going to top out at over $36B. . Raleigh, at this point approximately $15B, not $27B has been spent. Cost to complete using your figure is $12B more (or over $20B more if this is ultimately an average project). Is it worth it to spend $12B, your figure, to complete?… Read more »

Not my figures. I was totally against it to start with but now that 27 B has been flushed down the drain if you stop it that money is a total waste. The only way you could ever recop anything is to suck it up and finish it.

Dave Bearse
Dave Bearse

You’re $27B was correct. I had it in my mind the total was closer to $29B.
.
More money is being wasted if it’s not worth spending $12B to finish it, and if it is worth it, at what amount of money won’t it be worth it? There’s certainly no guarantee they’ll finish it for $27B.
.
Using their misprojections to date to project into the future, they spent 80% of the budget to learn they needed 80% more. At that rate when they’ve spent over $20B we’ll be told it’ll take another $8B ($35B total) to complete.

Raleigh
Raleigh

This whole thing was a waste from the start but in for a penny, in for a pound. If you spend 35B to finish it you will start to get a return on your investment even if it never fully makes back 35b. If you stop it your 27B is just gone. All it boils down too is how much blood are you going to lose…At lease with a finished reactor it can put some of it back..

People would be at the Capitol with pitchforks if we spent $27B on alternative energy development.

For the list of essential ingredients for southern cooking I would add:
1. Cornmeal- for baking and frying.
2. Duke Mayonnaise – tomato sandwiches
3. Grits
4. Pecans
5. Smoked ham hocks or country ham- especially for greens in the fall and winter.
I try to keep buttermilk on hand but I rarely use more than half a half-quart in a week so it seems like a waste of money.
I would also suggest some chili powder or cayenne pepper for seasoning.

I would suggest this line of questioning for Kavanaugh: “The more important, and curious, question is not how Kavanaugh accrued the debts attributed to the baseball tickets, but how he paid them down. I’ll say this as a former Senate staffer and former DOJ attorney… the “decision” to have a prosecutor ask the questions is b.s. for a couple of reasons: . 1) Mike Davis, Chairman Grassley’s lead counsel, has already publicly stated he was “unfazed and determined” to confirm Kavanaugh. So any prosecutor he picks is going to inherently raise questions of potential bias. . 2) The push for a prosecutor is solely because Republicans don’t want the negative optics of a bunch of old white dudes questioning a woman’s account of sexual assault by another old white dude. Seriously? There are a ton of people who can attest to the fact that he drank a lot and was a beligerent drunk. His partner in crime is hiding out in Delaware. Why doesn’t he want to testify? Trump has cratered in even the states he carried. This is not Gorsuch. Probably every Dem is going to vote against him along with at least 1 Republican. Even if Kavanaugh makes it on the court this is not over. The GOP has been hiding his records. Those are going to come out. If they were smart they would go ahead and dump him but they are stuck. Just got a tid-bit about the national celebrity Dim in GA. This past week Stacey Abrams took a swing through New York to raise more cash for her campaign for governor. She met with former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg and shared cookies with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo before hitting a fundraiser on billionaire Barry Diller’s yacht. Probably picked up some more $$ from Soros while she was up there too. She’s lovin’ the national stage and they are drowning her in money. 1) Using campaign funds for personal use – whether it be paying off credit card debt, financing a family vacation to Italy, or paying hush money to the women you were banging while your wife was off giving birth – is illegal.
.
2) Kemp’s loan issues really blunt the impact of claiming Abrams can’t handle her money. Kemp apparently can’t run a business (or the Secretary of State’s office, for that matter).

Sally Forth
Sally Forth

Dipping into money pots that were legally off-limits didn’t bother her the last few years. Oh, but that was not to pay her taxes or student loans, for which regular taxpayers were on the hook.

And “Kemp’s loan issues” is an Abrams campaign staff p/r tool. Last time I checked, signing to vouch for someone else’s loan was not an “issue”. And it was not his business.

Caroline

Signing to vouch for someone else’s loan is like signing into it yourself. It is called cosigning and if the first person on the loan can’t pay it you are on the hook for the money.

The good book even has passages about never being a cosigner. One of the best finance books is the Bible and the more you learn about science, it is a great predictive science book as well. It pays to be a bible thumping gun- toting rube that actually reads the darn thing.

I am not commenting on anyone’s cosigning in terms of these candidates. I don’t know the details. I am just adding that cosigning a loan is a bad idea for almost anyone if you ask me.

But what responsible people are concerned about is this:
Anyone can temporarily stimulate the economy with massive tax cuts. But you are betting that more growth will cover the cost, and tax cuts when the economy is already doing pretty well leaves little room for more growth. So there is concern that all we have really done is massively increase the deficit. So it’s not that things are terrible, it’s that it may be terrible for those planning to retire and our kids.
