September 14, 2018 8:33 AM Log in to Reply downthemiddle Speaking of leaks, why did Comey’s leak to the college professor buddy lead to the independent council on Trump in the first place? The whole story is a pile of leaks. And a pile of unsubstantiated the lies…. The FBI and Justice Department leak lies about Trump almost every day of the investigation… September 14, 2018 8:52 AM Log in to Reply Andrew C. Pope 1) It isn’t “leaking” if the information isn’t classified. In fact, it was labeled as “unclassified//FOUO.” Comey’s memo wasn’t classified at the time it was given to Daniel Richman and it still isn’t classified. . 2) The special counsel was brought on after Donald Trump fired James Comey. Going by DAG Rosenstein’s letter recommending the termination – i.e., the “official” reason – Comey was fired because he unfairly maligned Hillary Clinton by releasing derogatory information about her and the FBI’s investigation of her during the campaign. Going by Donald Trump’s own words – i.e., the “unofficial” reason – Comey was fired because of the ongoing Russia investigation. So your assertion that a “leaked” memo itself led to the independent counsel is incorrect. September 14, 2018 9:32 AM Log in to Reply downthemiddle Trump could fire Comey for ANY reason. So what! ? No need for a ginned up investigation. Rosenstein recommend firing Comey himself. So why in the hell is HE investigating Trump for doing just that? So why in the hell is HE investigating Trump for doing just that? . Rosenstein isn’t investigating Trump, the independent counsel is. Also, the independent counsel isn’t, per se, investigating the Comey firing, he’s investigating Russian influence in the American election writ large. . Independent councils need a crime to be committed to be initiated. . Not even remotely true. . Why so many FBI folks fired if they were honest. . I’ve asked you a number of times for the list of “FBI folks” that have been “fired” for dishonestly, leaking, etc. You’ve never been able to do so. . Lastly, because it sticks in my craw, it’s “counsel” not “council.” September 14, 2018 11:27 AM joe I waited patiently all day to see if anybody else would comment, but since they didn’t, FOUO means For Official Use Only. Comey was not using the ‘leak’ FOUO, so he was wrong, and should be prosecuted. September 14, 2018 9:24 PM Log in to Reply Andrew C. The way the numbers are going right now, President Trump could run up more in deficits in his first two years in office than the Obama Administration did in its final three years. Unless there is a big change, President Trump will have deficits over $1 trillion in 2019. As a reporter, I have to say how odd it is to see the GOP silent on the budget.” . The thing is, the GOP isn’t silent on the budget. Trump has just proposed additional tax cuts for the rich that will add hundreds of billions more to the deficit over the next few years, and after that, another $1.5 trillion to the deficit. . The Tories are in all kinds trouble with the Brexit implementation but Labor is too divided to take advantage of the situation. I see it as the Republicans driving tanks and the Democrats are riding a horse charging windmills. The GOP is silent on the budget because they know that if they lose the White House the Democrats will be in charge of the now massive deficit and inflation. Trump can’t pardon Manafort now. Obviously he can still issue a pardon, but doing so would be pointless. First, the $46 million in asset forfeitures is both civil and criminal. That’s ish is gone, pardon or no. Second, the charges being dismissed can still be charged in state-level courts. . Third, and this warrants its own point, Mueller has clearly gotten the info he wanted from Manafort. There was an hour and a half delay in the arraignment this morning and it seems entirely plausible Mueller spent that hour and a half having Manafort testify before the grand jury. . The question on my mind is this: what info does Manafort have? Manafort already knows what Gates testified to by virtue of the EDVA trial. So he knows a successful plea deal hinges on providing the independent counsel with new information that builds on what Gates has already given Mueller. Pope Ronan Farrow: https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/a-sexual-misconduct-allegation-against-the-supreme-court-nominee-brett-kavanaugh-stirs-tension-among-democrats-in-congress . The allegation dates back to the early nineteen-eighties, when Kavanaugh was a high-school student at Georgetown Preparatory School, in Bethesda, Maryland, and the woman attended a nearby high school. In the letter, the woman alleged that, during an encounter at a party, Kavanaugh held her down, and that he attempted to force himself on her. She claimed in the letter that Kavanaugh and a classmate of his, both of whom had been drinking, turned up music that was playing in the room to conceal the sound of her protests, and that Kavanaugh covered her mouth with his hand. She was able to free herself. Although the alleged incident took place decades ago and the three individuals involved were minors, the woman said that the memory had been a source of ongoing distress for her, and that she had sought psychological treatment as a result. . The reason this was referred to the FBI is because Maryland does not have a statute of limitations on felony sexual assault. September 14, 2018 12:05 PM Log in to Reply Noway2016 All them years ago! The rate of false accusations of sexual assault, rape, etc. is incredibly low. As I mentioned earlier, there is no statute of limitations on this offense in the State of Maryland. Unless you’ve got an actual source, I’d hold of on saying state authorities won’t investigate it. . Also, your assertion the FBI “yawned” demonstrates how little you understand about how the FBI works. They sent it to the appropriate channels within their purview. That isn’t “yawning” by any stretch. . 65 women of diverse backgrounds and beliefs . They all went to prep schools outside of DC. I don’t think there’s anything “diverse” about their backgrounds. . September 15, 2018 9:58 AM Andrew C. Pope Welcome to this week’s episode of “How the FBI Works” hosted by your friendly former DOJ friend: ACP” These allegations would be a state crime, so the FBI isn’t responsible for investigating. They could pass it on to appropriate state authorities for that. . What the FBI appears to have done is alert the White House about the information and updated Kavanaugh’s background file. This is the same thing that happened when the domestic violence allegations against Rob Porter surfaced. . As for it being a “last ditch effort” from Democrats, I don’t think that’s true. This is something the Judiciary Committee has known about for some time (so long, in fact, that Grassley went out and got 65 women who knew Kavanaugh in high school to sign a letter saying he was a good guy). That it didn’t come up during the hearings probably has more to do with the Judiciary Committee’s desire to keep those hearings about legal issues and not derail them with incindiary rape allegations. . Further, bringing this out in a committee hearing would not only necessitate outing a woman who wants to remain confidential, but would all but require her to testify publicly on national television. I think the delay has much more to do with that than anything else September 14, 2018 2:11 PM Log in to Reply alpha male This is absurd and even more embarrassing if you are indeed an attorney. She also could have given the info directly to the White House to be included in Kavanaugh’s background info if that is all she wanted. Your position on the delay in releasing this info until confirmation eve is even more ludicrous. As for protecting this accusers’s anonymity, Feinstein knows that if this woman is not willing to come forward and put her name out there thus allowing her credibility to be tested vis a vis Kavanaugh’s this is all futile. Sound and fury signifying nothing.Without an actual on the record accusation this is worthless and should have been treated as such by Feinstein.Feinstein knows that in this country we are allowed to confront our accusers. (same as the pubie on the Coke can and the heavy petting in high school story, and Kavanaugh saw a movie with Pee Wee Herman) I was minding my own business reading about Bob Woodward, the GREATEST INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER IN THE HISTORY OF OUR REPUBLIC (as he will be the first to tell you), and came across this bit of genius from his book. According to The New York Times, Woodward is flabbergasted that former FBI Director James Comey released the Russian dossier, when he had the “airtight” report of 17 INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES. Woodward writes: “It would be as if I had reported and written one of the most serious, complex stories for The Washington Post that I had ever done, and then provided an appendix of unverified allegations. Oh, by the way, here is a to-do list for further reporting and we’re publishing it.” You will know, if you have read a much better book about the Trump hysteria, “Resistance Is Futile! How the Trump-Hating Left Lost Its Collective Mind,” that, eventually, this is what the Resistance says about every part of the Russian collusion story. Oh, that old yarn? Yeah, we hysterically oversold that one, but maybe you’d be interested in this other scandal we tried pushing a few months ago! Thus, according to the Times: “Woodward has never been a graceful writer, but the prose here is unusually wooden.”) The Russian collusion story isn’t a story at all, but a constantly changing kaleidoscope with the same glass panes appearing, disappearing and then reappearing under the same headline: RUSSIAN COLLUSION PROVED! Each time, we’re supposed to pretend it’s an all-new “breaking news” story that hasn’t been disproved six times already. Among the kaleidoscope panes are: The Russia dossier! Roger Stone tweeted something mean about John Podesta! Jeff Sessions met with the Russian ambassador! Carter Page went to Russia! (But unlike Bernie Sanders, NOT on his honeymoon — ed.) George Papadopoulos talked about Hillary’s emails! The GOP platform on Ukraine was changed! Seventeen intelligence agencies say Russia hacked the DNC’s emails to help Trump! Of all these, it was the dossier that dominated the news for most of Trump’s first year in office. Here was the proof that Trump was owned by the Russians. The dossier had to be true — it just had to be! Then, suddenly, 10 months later, that kaleidoscope pane completely disappeared. The dossier was an irrelevancy, a red herring, a conspiracy theory, a misnomer. Why do Republicans keep talking about the dossier? Extra credit if you remember why the dossier got dropped like a hot potato in October 2017. ANSWER: After lying to the public all year about the dossier being funded by a “Republican donor” — just a random concerned citizen! — a judge finally forced the media to cough up the truth: The dossier was bought and paid for by Hillary Clinton — deviously, of course, using a law firm to pimp for her. The Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee had paid $12 million for that dossier. But during the 10 glorious months before we found out that the Russian dossier was nothing but Hillary’s oppo research, the media stamped their feet and demanded that we all swear to believe the dossier. They deny this now, but I have Nexis. With every other proof of Russian collusion discredited (except the actual collusion by both Hillary and the FBI), now they’re apparently going back to the 17 INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES! The 17 INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES gag is what liberals do whenever they have no evidence, no facts and no argument. They cite a surprisingly large, but meaningless, number. Three thousand scientists agree there is man-made global warming! (On closer examination, most of the “scientists” are ACLU lawyers.) President Trump has made 4,713 false or misleading claims! (Actually, only two: That bombing Syria was in America’s “national security interest” and “we’ve already started building the wall!”) The allegedly “airtight” report of 17 INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES was not what anyone would call “airtight.” In fact, it was kind of the opposite of “airtight.” Scratch the part about “airtight.” It could more accurately be described as a “complete joke.” Russian scholars scoffed at it, cyber-security experts said it was impossible to know who hacked the DNC, and intelligence veterans churlishly pointed out that the report contained not a speck of evidence. Until Trump won the election, even the media laughed at Hillary’s claim that Russia hacked the DNC to help Trump. President Obama took the claim that Russia had hacked the DNC so seriously that he boldly told Vladimir Putin to — I quote — “cut it out.” In lieu of evidence, the report merely asserts conclusions. It reads like a stiffly worded, bureaucratic version of Hillary’s talking points: We assess that president-elect Donald J. Trump has said degrading things about women in the past. We further assess that president-elect Trump will continue to develop capabilities to fat-shame women in the United States, judging from past practice and current efforts. All three agencies agree with this judgment. CIA and FBI have high confidence in this judgment; NSA has moderate confidence. Who foresaw in late 2015 how complete and through its takeover would be in 2015, other than Noways and downthemiddles,, though signs of its aggressive growth have been clear to all since 2008? . The cancer extends to the left, and it’s imperative it be checked and eradicated there too. September 16, 2018 7:34 AM Log in to Reply Noway2016 Dave. Go back and look at a few of DTM’s lists of Trump accomplishments. Cutting taxes, attempting to make trade deals more fair for our side, etc. What about those are cancerous? Are Trump’s insults over the top at times? Yes. But what about his actual policies are bad? September 16, 2018 8:07 AM Log in to Reply Dave Bearse So now trying counts as an accomplishment? Do you get a trophy for that? . For the record, trying is important to me and it gets credit. No Child Left Behind was flawed, but Bush got credit from me for trying to measurably improve educational accomplishment for those being left behind. At the other end of his term, Bush wouldn’t tackle illegal immigration when I think it could have been addressed. Cancer had already set in. The left was complicit in it. . A tax cut adding $1.5 trillion to the debt during a very good economy, mainly benefitting the rich who admittedly pay a lot in federal taxes, is the opposite of an accomplishment. It’s damage to be mitigated or undone. The tax cut was cited as reason for the proposal to freeze federal employees pay. It will be cited as reason to cut socialist Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Benefits mostly to the rich. adverse affects almost wholly to workers and the poor. . The economy is humming along, as good or even a little better than during the latter Obama years. Like Trump’s wealth though, it was inherited. Another instance of being on third base and thinking it was a triple. As a reminder, according to Trump supporters, comparable economic growth under Obama was horrible, just totally horrible. The books were cooked. But the incompetent dirtbag fixed ’em his first month in office! So he’s got that accomplishment going for him. . Kissing Putin’s ring. Not an accomplishment. . Denying Russian attempts to influence the election. Repeatedly without any basis undermining the integrity of election systems. Repeatedly undermining the DoJ and national security apparatus relied on to protect us from crime and foreign threats. Treason, perhaps not in the legal sense. Certainly not an accomplishment. . Denying global warning that may be an existential threat, as a Chinese hoax. More damage to try to undo. . Syria? North Korea? The jury’s out. There’s nothing in the Trump Presidential record thus far to indicate he can close a big deal. His role in the tax cut was largely merely signing a document that landed on his desk. . How about cherry-picking (I certainly do it) a few other “etc” accomplishments from DTM’s list? September 16, 2018 9:04 AM Dave Bearse Hear ye, hear ye! The Republican plan to MAGA.
