U.S. threatens Ecuador with trade sanctions and loss of military aid after Ecuador introduces a resolution encouraging breast feeding. The U.S. later backs off after the resolution is re-introduced by Russia.

Embedded in that article: “In talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Americans have been pushing for language that would limit the ability of Canada, Mexico and the United States to put warning labels on junk food and sugary beverages, according to a draft of the proposal reviewed by The New York Times.” This points out a key difference of Trumpists: For them, the swamp is the very existence of the regulations, even if the regulations were created for the protection of children. But others more correctly see the swamp as the existence of regulations that are… Read more »

How much did the meeting with North Korea cost the US? Not even $1. A photo op… How much did Obama get taken by the Iranians? $152 billion! $2 billion delivered in cash on pallets…Is Iran still behaving badly? Was that a good deal for the US? Be honest. If they both got taken, who was the bigger fool? What was the Clinton Foundation cut on that one?

So far Trump’s ridiculous trip to N. Korea has cost the tax payers 20 million. Obama got inspections in Iran. Trump got nothing but N. Korea laughing at him and N. Korea literally made a fool of Pompeo yesterday.

So now foreign policy is about travel expenses? Forget right and wrong, or good policy.
Also– Obama and/or Clinton!
Surely, dislike or hate for them is still more important than right or wrong policy.

Andrew C. Pope

To be fair, we can’t afford a lot on foreign travel because Tom Price, Scott Pruitt, Steve Mnuchin, and Ryan Zinke used up the travel budget with their private jets, military charters, and first class tickets.

MattMD_actual
MattMD_actual

We did get inspections and some measure of oversight of the Iranian nuclear program.

Trump just got straight-up played by the North Koreans. There is a reason why we have been at a stalemate with them for 60+ years. Bluster isn’t going to get very far with them considering how they are masters at it. Considering their backing by China and the fact that they basically have Seoul by the cajoles with their artillery placements makes for an intractable situation.

MattMD_actual

Ha, I meant cajones. Where is the damn edit button?

Also…that money was the Iranian’s. We had it frozen since 1979 and would not give it back…so that really isnt a cost to tax payers

Trump punched down on Ecuador to drop sponsorship of a World Health Assembly resolution to encourage breast feeding, with “at least a dozen countries, most of them poor nations in Africa and Latin America, backed off [support of the resolution], citing fears of retaliation.” In the end, the Trump administration’s efforts were mostly unsuccessful. It was the Russians who ultimately stepped in to introduce the measure. The Americans did not threaten them. Maybe Trump will MAGA by unconditionally agreeing to discontinue US participation in NATO exercises to Putin when they meet privately. After all, discontinuation of military exercises with South… Read more »

One night, after Miller ordered $80 of takeout sushi from a restaurant near his apartment, a bartender followed him into the street and shouted, “Stephen!” When Miller turned around, the bartender raised both middle fingers and cursed at him, according to an account Miller has shared with White House colleagues.

Outraged, Miller threw the sushi away, he later told his colleagues.

Also, this quote from Newt is pretty funny:
They used to be passive because they thought they were the future. Now they know we’re the future, and it’s driving them nuts.

Newt Gingrich, a man who is 75 and hasn’t been nationally relevant since the late 90s, thinking he and the old folks* who voted for Trump, another septuagenarian, constitute “the future” is such a perfect encapsulation of the narcissism endemic to the boomer generation.

*I used the term “old folks” because Trump’s greatest margins were among voters 50 years and older. Trump lost heavily with voters under 40.

While I find it ironic that Renee “We Shouldn’t Test the Backlog of Untested Rape Kits” Unterman is the one calling for an investigation of past misdeeds, it’s an incredibly low blow of the Kemp campaign to accuse her of mental breakdown, especially given what her family has gone through.

Kemp’s spokesman Ryan Mahoney has the credibility of the usual political spin doctor. One excuse for the Kentucky taxpayer subsidized company that Kemp invested in defaulting on its payments to farmers in 2016 was “the great recession”. Hart AgStrong got a $450,000 tax incentive for job creation from the Kentucky Business Investment Program. Steve Beshear, Kentucky’s governor at the time, came to the groundbreaking [2014]for the $7.3 million, 23,000-square-foot facility and said the canola crushing operation “will also provide a significant boost to our local farmers and Kentucky’s food production industry. Andrew C. Pope

I’m actually rather shocked by the Kavanaugh pick, as I think he’s the toughest of the four to confirm. He’s got an long, and decidedly partisan, legal career (which caused a 3 year hold-up when he was nominated for the DC Circuit back in 2003), his work for the Bush Administration risks dragging up ghosts from the legal battles past (i.e. torture), and he’s got a huge stack of writings, opinions, and work product Judiciary Committee staff will have to sort through that could help Democrats stall things a couple of months longer than they’d otherwise be able to. Factor… Read more »

I figured Trump would pick him based on his writings that a sitting president standing trial in office would cause havoc. If even the civil cases go to SCOTUS, Trump would view Kavanaugh a vote on his side.

Plus he keeps Collins.

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

I think that’s debatable. His language on Roe is squishy enough to keep her happy, but he’s far from a lock to uphold it. On top of that, his take on the ACA’s protections for pre-existing conditions and women’s healthcare may jeopardize Collins and Murkowski as much as his stance on abortion rights. His pro-surveillance state position and work with the Bush Administration may alienate Rand Paul, but I don’t think there’s any real possibility he flips. Greatest challenge here is the paperwork. Before we even knew the nominee, Grassley seemed unwilling to commit to hearings before September. Given the… Read more »

“Under the Constitution, the President may decline to enforce a statute that regulates private individuals when the President deems the statute unconstitutional, even if a court has held or would hold the statute constitutional.” — from a Kavanaugh dissent.

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

Stop falling into this trap. There’s absolutely zero chance Trump read that 2009 law review article, there’s zero chance Trump read any of Kavanaugh’s other opinions, and there’s zero chance Trump put more than two seconds of thought into this pick.

The Fed Soc and Don McGahn said “pick this guy” so he picked that guy.

Benevolus

Maybe, but it’s easy to believe he might have said to McGahn “Make sure you pick me someone who will cover my ass”, or something to that effect.

Definitely not the toughest to confirm. Barrett was my favorite but she would have been the toughest to confirm because of the 2 pro abort gop Senators.

Collins and Murkowski will not vote against Kavanugh because he has a partisan past. They would vote against Barrett because she is so obviously pro life. She actually lives her convictions rather than just talking the talk. Hopefully we get her next time.

But I will take Kavanaugh in a heartbeat. Very strong on religious liberty. Very strong on 2 A.
A massive upgrade over Kennedy.
