Morning Reads — July 18th
It’s political convention week in America, and at 1 PM the Republican National Convention gets underway in Cleveland. Above, former Gov. Zell Miller addresses the 2004 GOP convention.
- Cleveland is ready.
- Georgia’s primary runoff enters its final week of early voting, and in the Third District, the ads are getting nasty.
- Meanwhile, early voting turnout is up in some key races.
- Three police officers are dead in Baton Rouge. Here’s the latest information on what’s known about the killer.
- If, like almost half of those surveyed in a recent poll, you think you’ve seen a TV commercial for Donald Trump, you’re wrong.
- Democrats will again try to flip Georgia blue, especially in Cobb and Gwinnett counties.
- A Roswell police officer was fired last week after he was found displaying a Confederate flag at his home.
- The GOP convention is supposed to be a time to celebrate the nomination of a party’s presidential nominee. With Donald Trump as the presumptive nominee, the mood is a little different.
- The convention scene, described in words of a single syllable, just the way Donald Trump likes it.
- In the age of Trump, the Republican Party comes to a fork in the road, and must decide the direction it will take.
- Henrik Stenson holds off Phil Mickelson to win the British Open.
- With Republicans descending on Cleveland for their convention, Jim Galloway gets personal in describing his relationship with the city that used to be known as “The Best Location in the Nation.”
- Will Kremer is away this week, trying to get as far away from the GOP convention as possible, perhaps because he got this wrong a year ago. Just to keep that millennial vibe going, I found a story that combines Snapchat, Taylor Swift, and Kim Kardashian. Enjoy your week.

Zell’s address was the speech of a statesman who realized the positions of his own party were pathetic and sick with weakness. We need him today. Especially today.
The liberal H Post disagrees with you!
…………Clinton’s war-mongering is a matter of public record. Just today, the New York Times published a devastating policy analysis of Clinton’s role in the overthrow of Libyan president Muammar el-Qaddafi and the subsequent descent of Libya into chaos and civil war. “We came, we saw, he died!” Clinton exclaimed after Qaddafi was captured, tortured, and summarily executed. Afterwards, Hillary’s aides developed a “brag sheet” to showcase her role in Qaddafi’s overthrow. Then, Clinton and other Obama officials stepped back and let the nation disintegrate.
As the Times reporters recount, “Mrs. Clinton would be mostly a bystander as the country dissolved into chaos, leading to a civil war that would destabilize the region, fueling the refugee crisis in Europe and allowing the Islamic State to establish a Libyan haven that the United States is now desperately trying to contain.”
Clinton is unrepentant to this day. She is a hard-core militarist and interventionist—a right-wing wolf in liberal sheep’s clothing. Though Clinton has now found it convenient to rue her vote for the invasion of Iraq in 2003, she in fact fiercely defended Bush’s Iraq war policy for years. (At least 174,000 people died in the conflict, including over 110,000 civilians.)
But Hillary’s war-mongering is not the worst thing about her. Under President Obama, the gap between rich and poor widened to a degree unprecedented in human history. Though few liberals seem aware of the fact, poverty increased sharply under Obama, with blacks, Latinos, and women suffering disproportionately from the President’s policies. So if Clinton continues down Obama’s neoliberal path, as she vows to, we can expect the ranks of the poor—today, 47 million Americans, with more than one in five children living in poverty—to swell.
Because Clinton is a close friend of the big banks, big pharma, and “big” everything……….

……….dangerous and divisive campaign………..
Did you not post the above? The theme of the Hillary campaign, and supporters like you, is vote for Hillary because Trump is dangerous. My point is Hillary has her own issues, even on the left about being dangerous. I did not think I had to connect dots for a very smart lawyer like you.
Face it, you got caught, using the talking points from the Hillary campaign about being “dangerous”. My main point is we are facing real issues, and supporters of both campaigns would rather play talking point games, rather than solve problems. Rather sad, after what is happening with the all the unrest.
Not sure that’s exclusively a Hillary talking point. I can think of a lot of GOP people who thinks Trump’s campaign is dangerous and divisive.
LOL….You are way smarter than that. It is her campaign theme just watch the news use google…… She is even running the daisy LBJ add used against Goldwater, now updated against Trump. Ironic since Hillary worked on the Goldwater campaign, No matter what I post, you attack it, even something this obvious.
Hillary Clinton brands Donald Trump a dangerous ‘demagogue’

That’s a pretty big leap, John. I’ve got to agree with ACP here.
I stand by my original comment on this topic. I will add the lack of dealing with real issues on both sides, is creating this toxic environment. 70 percent of people in the western world are feeling economic decline, via ill thought out trade policy, and technology. Add on a broken criminal justice system, ie War on Drugs/94 crime bill, Neocon foreign policy that has made the world less safe and we cannot afford, crumbling infrastructure, healthcare system we cannot afford and a broken retirement options that has many choosing between medicine and food, you have a very toxic environment. The above can be fixed, but not when both sides, using a Jerry Springier show style politics, over solving problems.

John Konop says:
One thing is very clear, Trump is a dream to drive ratings for TV/Radio/news/talk shows. This is the most commented post on the PP by far on the front page, verse real issues that have been posted. Trump sucks all the oxygen out of room, for the other GOP candidates and real issues. Yet he also will drive up viewership for the GOP debates, and race. A real catch 22……Charlie is correct, if it becomes more about the side show than real issues…not good for the GOP. Trump actually could add some very stimulating, and thoughtful debate on many issues. The problem is Trump is also a celebrity, who loves being provocative first, over real debate on issues. Trump is a very smart guy, this will only open more doors for him to make money, no matter the results. After this run, he will have his own show on politics….why Fox is hyping him. Win-win for Fox and Trump….but could be a bad hangover for the rest of us……….
So, I hope the others were labeled “red” and “blue”, not “black” and “yellow”… Still, c’mon guys, that’s really stupid.

What the hell is wrong with these people? No one thought…hmmm… maybe putting a sign up that says “White Elevators” may not be the best idea. Let’s pick another color.
The End Of A Republican Party
Racial and cultural resentment have replaced the party’s small government ethos

Busy next couple of weeks for GeorgiaPol and ‘conservative’ pundits. Week one will see a nonstop campaign of turd polishing; week two will vacillate between perpetual outrage and victimhood. Probably be a good time to start thinking about what happens when this finally ends. How do you get the stain of Trump off you? Is it going to be another 4-8 years of obstructionism or will the GOP actually follow the will of the voters to do something? I guess this requires the type of leadership that republicans just don’t have and probably never will.
