I was doing a google streetview in Portugal recently (it’s just what I like to do) and was surprised to see a poster for the Communist Party. Portugal, not known to me to be some satellite of Russia or China, can tolerate Communist Party participation in it’s government but I doubt we can.

I don’t think it is all about the Georgia State Flag. I think Mr. Kruse exaggerates his knowledge on the issue.
This is the topic of my post. Yes, there is circumstantial evidence that the adoption of the flag was a protest against integration. However, there is no smoking gun.

I never heard about the Legislature’s motives in changing the flag before 1993.
Another thing to consider: The debate over changing the flag took place from 1992 – 2000. There was a consensus that the flag was offensive to a significant portion of the population. Isn’t that sufficient reason to change the flag? Why would you need to engage in historic revisionism, when you already have a good reason to make the change?
And why is this being debated in 2018?
You must not have read the post I wrote yesterday. I covered the senate report in depth. Did you read this part? ““Little information exists as to why the flag was changed, there is no written record of what was said on the Senate and House floors or in committee and Georgia does not include a statement of legislative intent when a bill is introduced – SB 98 simply makes reference to the “Battle Flag of the Confederacy.”
And what does this have to do with Brian Kemp? The New York Times published the photo of the (younger and much slimmer) Stacey Abrams burning the flag. It remains to be seen if this will help, or hurt, the Abrams campaign.
Mr. Kruse did not provide me with any information. He made a snide comment about his book… which was not about the flag … and congratulated me for finding a blog post.
No, I don’t understand how the NYT publishing a photo of Stacey Abrams is going to help her get the conservative white votes she needs to win.
If you were to read my post, you would see that I agree with many, though not all, of your points. Essentially, there is a huge gray area, and you believe what you want to believe. Over a matter than was legislated in 1956, and changed by the legislature in 2000 and 2003. And was not a necessary discussion when it took place 25 years ago.
Is the NYT supporting Kemp?

The national media is having a good time with the Kemp-Abrams nonsense. Does the NYT have a liberal agenda? It is tough to say. The moral of the story is that while not everything is plain as words of legislation or regulation, the intent, and the values, and the cultural impact they have are all critical. Talk to a few black friends? My partner of 21 years is African American. His Mom, sister, niece and nephew last week returned home to SW GA after a week’s stay here because of no electricity. Four of the five households that adjoin our home are African-American. Two of my three principal clients at work are African-American. I’m pretty sure I regularly speak with greater numbers of African-Americans is a greater number of contexts than you do, DTM.
I am so tempted to just say the word was used out of ignorance. Because, you know, ignorance is plausible (although not excusable). But he used the word because he heard it from somewhere at some point in time, and it’s only been used in one context during his entire lifetime, that being White nationalism. With one exception being maybe like a 3rd grade history/social studies textbook.

Nevertheless, he didn’t whip out a shotgun or drag a couple of Mexicans out from under the podium, so he probably passed the test for anyone looking for that.

My understanding of why he’s going to rural areas is because they are not voting in enough numbers to offset the votes that are happening in cities and suburbs.

At any rate, a good example of this meme is the current flap about the word “nationalism” and some people wrongly calling it “racist.” The dictionary definition of nationalism is “loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially: a sense of national consciousness.” It has no relation to racism whatsoever, but this truth is being trampled by some.
You do know that HItler promoted nationalism don’t you? German nationalism is what led to killing Jews. Nationalism is not a good thing. Don’t confuse it with patriotism. Most nationalists want a “pure” society defined as accepting only those that they deem “worthy”. It has led to ethnic cleansing and all kinds of evils. The only time nationalism has been a positive is in the case of a colony breaking away from the mother country.
Caroline, according to history, Hitler did many atrocious things and manipulated otherwise good things in order to accomplish his ends. Nationalism is the same thing as patriotism. It does not have anything to do with the things you mention. Don’t let the word thieves manipulate you. They take perfectly good words and turn them upside down.

So, there are at least a few definitions of nationalism, and let’s not cherry-pick. There’s the one that you use, and the one that is that says it’s about independence of a PEOPLE (not Nation), and then there’s the one where it’s the independence of a Nation at the expense of other Nations and Peoples (as in Not Only do I love my country, but I love only my Country, and you and your Country suck and we’re going to hurt you).
THOERETICALLY, Trump could have been talking about any of them. But the first one, the definition you cite, hasn’t been in common usage since like the turn of the 20th century. Because the implications of the 3rd definition soured people. Then White Nationalists started using the 2nd definition and soured the usage moreso.
So either Trump doesn’t care about history, or hasn’t learned anything about history since reading his 3rd grade Social Studies textbook that talked about Nationalism in the 1800s, or doesn’t care about how White Nationalists have used the term, or enjoys their usage of the term. No matter how you cut it, he’s ignorant of history. And outdated. And tolerant of racist language. And maybe -is also supportive of racists and/or racist himself.

You can and should start the process at a US consulate by applying for refugee status, which is one of the basics for asylum. A “refugee” is someone who has been forced from their homeland. I agree for a change with Andrew. The president cannot control the stinking stock market. None of them can. There are way too many factors beyond a president’s control.
Jimmy Carter was a poor president but he didn’t cause all of the disaster of ’73 and 74. Stagflation and oil embargoes did. Overvaluation of the old Nifty Fifty was a huge culprit. Massive rate increases and multiples dropping like a freaking rock occurred.
Reagan didn’t cause he 87 crash. He benefitted from a very oversold market and the beginning of a 30 year interest rate decline and pro-growth policies. Clinton didn’t cause the stinking tech bubble and 50% decline. Overvaluation did.
Bush didn’t cause the stinking 2008 ass beating. 30 years of stupid lending decisions caught up with us, way too damn much debt followed by the worst 10- year period in history
The Fed dropping rates to zero was the huge factor and absurdly low prices resulted in a long bull market that is still intact. It did not rise because of Obama’s 242 tax increases and no growth agenda. Trump has passed pro- growth polices. No argument can be made against that.. He cannot or should not control the Fed’s interest rate rises that are simply normalizing after absurd lows. That is the main negative. The economy is superb.
Trump crowing about the stock market could come back to haunt him because he cannot control that.
If someone thinks they can control the market they are an idiot. Buffett is the best on earth when it come to the market.. He will tell you he aint got a GD clue where the market is going and DOES NOT WASTE HIS TIME trying to predict where it goes. He buys great companies at reasonable prices and gives it time. Over time that works. Bonds, CDs and gold over time basically suck and offer almost no inflation protection.

If you want to know why Trump acts the way he does with regards to other countries, it is because they all probably have blackmail material on him. Putin surely does. Judging by his behavior with regards to the Mohamed bin Salman, I would say he does too. The jury is still out on China. So far China has been able to just crater his supporters economically.
