I like those political posters.
I was doing a google streetview in Portugal recently (it’s just what I like to do) and was surprised to see a poster for the Communist Party. Portugal, not known to me to be some satellite of Russia or China, can tolerate Communist Party participation in it’s government but I doubt we can.

Stacey did very well, as expected. Articulate, just the right amount of detail. Mostly positive. Kemp did appear to get a bit flustered a couple of times, I can’t remember about what. But they had the split screen going and he was rolling his eyes and tilting his head, that kind of stuff. He wasn’t very detailed, basically a lot of boilerplate repeated several times. Nevertheless, he didn’t whip out a shotgun or drag a couple of Mexicans out from under the podium, so he probably passed the test for anyone looking for that. There was a fire alarm at… Read more »

Two days ago, I thought we were through talking about the Georgia State Flag. https://chamblee54.wordpress.com/2018/10/23/why-did-the-1956-legislature-change-the-flag/

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

Read your blog. Read your exchange with Kevin Kruse. I’m going to have to side with the Princeton history professor who literally wrote a book on this subject.

chamblee54
chamblee54

This is the book. https://www.amazon.com/White-Flight-Atlanta-Conservatism-Politics-ebook/dp/B00DU9KR3I/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1540385405&sr=1-1
I don’t think it is all about the Georgia State Flag. I think Mr. Kruse exaggerates his knowledge on the issue.

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

I’ve read his book. I’d recommend it to anyone reading this site. . In addition to the book, he also teaches on Civil Rights-era politics in the American South and is one of the most widely respected historians in that regard. This subject is, quite literally, his specialty. . The adoption of the 1956 flag isn’t really an event with the kind of depth and significance it takes to fill an entire book. As Kruse demonstrated both yesterday and in his writing on this era in Georgia’s history, understanding the adoption of the 1956 flag requires understanding the context of… Read more »

This is the topic of my post. Yes, there is circumstantial evidence that the adoption of the flag was a protest against integration. However, there is no smoking gun.
I have seen a review of the Kruse book, and it is about housing. He does not mention the 1956 legislature. https://networks.h-net.org/node/9997/reviews/10652/highsmith-kruse-white-flight-atlanta-and-making-modern-conservatism

Kevin Kruse blocked me on twitter. I must be doing somethiing right. . Or you’re being a troll and acting like a presentation of a damning amount of evidence is invalid because no one literally came out and explicitly said “yeah, we did it because we’re hella racist.” . Like I said in my last post, your argument boils down to: “yes, the Georgia legislature of that time was in the middle of a wave of reactionary pro-segregation legislation designed to undermine the Brown decision and but adopting a symbol of white-supremacy and sticking it on the flag had nothing… Read more »

I never heard about the Legislature’s motives in changing the flag before 1993.
Another thing to consider: The debate over changing the flag took place from 1992 – 2000. There was a consensus that the flag was offensive to a significant portion of the population. Isn’t that sufficient reason to change the flag? Why would you need to engage in historic revisionism, when you already have a good reason to make the change?
And why is this being debated in 2018?

Andrew C. Pope
Andrew C. Pope

And why is this being debated in 2018 . Because Brian Kemp and his campaign staff full of pathetic hacks are trying to stoke fears of a black woman becoming governor rather than engaging her on ideas like Medicaid expansion, development in rural Georgia, or education funding. . Why would you need to engage in historic revisionism . “Revisionism” implies that the legislature’s motivation in 1955-56 wasn’t to adopt a symbol of white supremacy as a middle finger to both the federal government and black Georgians. I think Kruse provided you ample evidence that it was. . I never heard… Read more »

What’s the point of saying “much slimmer” other than to be a jerk? If that was your approach to Kruse, I can see why he saw fit to deem you not worth his time. I can pretty safely conclude you aren’t worth mine either.
.
Substantively, you can’t seem to move past the fact the weight of evidence weighs against you.
.
As for Kemp, his campaign was flogging this, along with folks like Erick Erickson before it hit the New York Times. If you don’t understand how the pipeline of campaign – surrogate – nightly news works, I can’t help you.

chamblee54
chamblee54

No, I don’t understand how the NYT publishing a photo of Stacey Abrams is going to help her get the conservative white votes she needs to win.
If you were to read my post, you would see that I agree with many, though not all, of your points. Essentially, there is a huge gray area, and you believe what you want to believe. Over a matter than was legislated in 1956, and changed by the legislature in 2000 and 2003. And was not a necessary discussion when it took place 25 years ago.

The national media is having a good time with the Kemp-Abrams nonsense. Does the NYT have a liberal agenda? It is tough to say. Do NYT smart people think they are helping Abrams with the flag burning story? They just might be that out of touch with Georgia voters. Maybe the agenda is to get as many eyeballs as possible to look at their site, and not worry about the results.

It would be great if we had leaders who could work with other countries to determine the best way to address the coming instability in humane ways. You know, like after you use it to win an election.

Like how you can apply for asylum at a US consulate (you can’t) or how you have to have refugee status before you can seek asylum (you don’t) or how this immigrant caravan is trying to immigrate illegally (they aren’t).

Sally Forth
Sally Forth

You can and should start the process at a US consulate by applying for refugee status, which is one of the basics for asylum. A “refugee” is someone who has been forced from their homeland. And an “asylum seeker” is someone who says he or she is a refugee, but whose claim has not yet been definitively evaluated.

This migrant caravan is indeed migrating illegally through countries not their own, with a stated goal of breaching the US border the same way.

I did it! Yay! Just not sure how I did…..

At any rate, a good example of this meme is the current flap about the word “nationalism” and some people wrongly calling it “racist.” The dictionary definition of nationalism is “loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially: a sense of national consciousness.” It has no relation to racism whatsoever, but this truth is being trampled by some.

Caroline
Caroline

You do know that HItler promoted nationalism don’t you? German nationalism is what led to killing Jews. Nationalism is not a good thing. Don’t confuse it with patriotism. Most nationalists want a “pure” society defined as accepting only those that they deem “worthy”. It has led to ethnic cleansing and all kinds of evils. The only time nationalism has been a positive is in the case of a colony breaking away from the mother country.

Sally Forth
Sally Forth

Caroline, according to history, Hitler did many atrocious things and manipulated otherwise good things in order to accomplish his ends. Nationalism is the same thing as patriotism. It does not have anything to do with the things you mention. Don’t let the word thieves manipulate you. They take perfectly good words and turn them upside down.

Another Orwell quote:: “First they steal the words, then they steal the meanings.” He wrote this in his book “1984”, accurately foreseeing the future actions of socialist/communist political leaders and their manipulation of public opinion.

Caroline
Caroline

Nationalism is NOT the same thing as patriotism. You are not being factual here. Patriotism is loving your country right or wrong. Nationalism leads to all kinds of evils because it is exclusionary by nature. You can’t be a real American unless you look a certain way, live in a certain state or have a particular religion is the way of nationalism. However I am not surprised to see you embrace such an odious belief. You don’t understand what patriotism is but then most conservatives seem to not understand it.

Did you know Hitler was a male? He was white. Anyone white and male is a Nazi. That is the logic of some geniuses around here. I think he had brown eyes too…uh oh. Hope you don’t have brown eyes. By here is the definition of a nationalist. A person who advocates political independence for a country. Maybe a nationalist is someone who loves their country, not selling it out to other countries around the world. Shouldn’t every leader of their own country look out for their own country? That is one of many reasons Trump won. So someone that… Read more »

So, there are at least a few definitions of nationalism, and let’s not cherry-pick. There’s the one that you use, and the one that is that says it’s about independence of a PEOPLE (not Nation), and then there’s the one where it’s the independence of a Nation at the expense of other Nations and Peoples (as in Not Only do I love my country, but I love only my Country, and you and your Country suck and we’re going to hurt you). THOERETICALLY, Trump could have been talking about any of them. But the first one, the definition you cite,… Read more »

I agree for a change with Andrew. The president cannot control the stinking stock market. None of them can. There are way too many factors beyond a president’s control. Jimmy Carter was a poor president but he didn’t cause all of the disaster of ’73 and 74. Stagflation and oil embargoes did. Overvaluation of the old Nifty Fifty was a huge culprit. Massive rate increases and multiples dropping like a freaking rock occurred. Reagan didn’t cause he 87 crash. He benefitted from a very oversold market and the beginning of a 30 year interest rate decline and pro-growth policies. Clinton… Read more »
