Morning Reads – Thursday, September 28, 2017
On this date in 1892, the first nighttime football game in the US took place under electric lights. The game was between the Mansfield State Normal School and the Wyoming Seminary.

The most envied, most admired man in America has died. Hugh Heffner! RIP!
Are you saying the government is not doing everything possible to help or are you just bloviating your Trump dislike, per your usual?
Specifically what could they have done that they haven’t? Answer? Not a damn thing. And that is killing you libs! Sad! Although I was gen-u-inely impressed you didn’t put some references to race into your last two posts. Must be a recent personal record!
I don’t know exactly what they did do, but the information hasn’t been exactly forthcoming so we are left to speculate.
Did we send in army guys to clear the airstrips right away?
Did we send Navy guys in there to repair the docks right away?
We knew the storm was coming, did we stage and mobilize water and generators and medical supplies like we usually do?
Why wasn’t that hospital ship there on like the 22nd?
In other words, what is taking so damn long?
If something was actually killing libs, if would have already been posted on the GOPs twitter feed by now. Stop being pointlessly dramatic.
The Administration, knowing that FEMA was already stretched to its limits, could have at least communicated what they were doing starting last week. They didn’t. Reports, both official and by news coverage – foreign and domestic – recorded the levels of damage and lack of power, diesel and communication towers starting last week Wednesday. When Harvey and Irma hit, pics of updated meetings came out daily over the weekend from Camp David and NJ while it was making landfall. Press reports of Cabinet level briefing by HHS, EPA, Small Business, D of ED, Energy, and USDA were out in less than a week. I’m sure the administration and the cabinet did all this too in the last 10 days (Kelly alone would have made it happen), but the admin didn’t talk about it. Why?
Meanwhile, back at the “Trump is Pavlov, We are dogs” world of twitter, number. of Puerto Rico related tweets between this last Friday night and Monday morning by Trump – ZERO. Number of NFL Tweets 12. The coast Guard reopened the ort of San Juan on Saturday night for day time use – know how I know this, the Southeast regional command of USCG to us on it’s twitter account .The Military had Senate level meeting on USVI and Puerto Rico responds on Tuesday. The President said more about the Dallas Cowboys then Puerto Rico that day. I have posted on here more about the local shipping, NG and local Military activities related to Puerto Rico out of Savannah then the President has mentioned anything related to Puerto Rico this week. When he could have been talking about what our troops were actually doing he was deleting tweets on supporting Strange. He could have been talking about the actual activates of our troops in Puerto Rico yesterday. He started a Twitter war with Facebook. He needs to look at The US response to the earthquake in Haiti instead of whining about having the votes for health care if not for a hospitalized Senator (he doesn’t but that’s a mote point).
For a man who thrives on image and optics that make him look good, he and his staff are failing this week on Puerto Rico.
Here is a good read on the situation. http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/09/26/damaged-ports-and-airfields-limiting-puerto-rico-aid-effort-dun.html
That’s good. Thanks.
Sigh. I do not know what is worse. The right wing attempts to smear Houston mayor Sylvester Turner for not evacuating the city – claiming that his doing so was a plot to politically embarrass Trump – and not apologizing when they turned out to be 100% wrong, or the left’s flailing attempts to turn the Puerto Rico tragedy into “Trump’s Katrina” … when discontent over the Iraq War and gas skyrocketing from $1.00 a gallon to nearly $5.00 a gallon actually had more to do with Bush’s drop in the polls after Katrina than the Katrina response itself. (Also Trump does not have a Michael Brown running FEMA to be an easy target.)
But please see this. It explains why – among other things – the claims that the martialing the military to aid Puerto Rico would do more harm than good.

Also, a mass evacuation of Puerto Rico is precisely what the Puerto Rican politicians don’t want, because – let’s face it – pretty much no one who leaves Puerto Rico right now is going to come back. It is going to take months merely to rebuild basic infrastructure and years to rebuild the economy so the people who leave would simply start new lives in Florida, New York and New Jersey. It would be the Hurricane Katrina exodus – where hundreds of thousands of the people who decamped to Houston, Atlanta and elsewhere wound up never leaving – but on a much larger scale.
Incidentally, despite what you choose to believe, the president is not personally conducting the Puerto Rico response. FEMA is, and FEMA has not requested large scale military assistance. FEMA won’t request ANYTHING of beyond the basics until their assessments are done and they have some semblance of an infrastructure in place.
Go back to hoping that Mueller finds some evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia or – since you are already in the misery game – hoping that the economy takes a severe downturn throwing millions of America out of work. (Yes, I do remember Republicans rooting for the economy to remain terrible under Obama, and claiming for as long as they possibly could that the economy hadn’t turned around when it obviously had, even down to making claims that the Department of Labor was falsifying unemployment reports. Great job stooping down to their level .. you should be so proud of yourselves.) But no one who isn’t already a Democrat partisan is going to claim that there is some speedy, efficient, effective way of performing disaster recovery on an island in the Atlantic when FEMA’s resources are already taxed by the hurricanes that we just had in Texas and Florida, but that Trump is choosing to maliciously withhold it because … well we already know why you think that so why bother spelling it out.
Meanwhile at the Capital building, this happened.

Tom Price:
First it was five flights, “response to the hurricanes”.
Then 17 more flights- from before the hurricanes. “Sec. P meeting with regular people”.
And five more- 27 total (so far), at least two of which have no discernible purpose requiring a charter.
Any other administration and he would be in deep trouble, Who knows with this circus act.
B, you’re right. Price is gone. Inside of a week. Why people do the things they do when the do not have to is just baffling.
I suspect that this is the type of thing that term-limit advocates think of. Too long in the government breed corruption. But (me not being a fan of term limits) would say that somebody like Tom Price either already was corrupt or just needed the proper authority to act on it. Somebody is going to be in that position, who do you think is more likely to take advantage of all the perks- someone who knows the limits (but chooses to exceed them anyway) or some rube who doesn’t even know? But actually, term limits wouldn’t even stop something like this anyway because these guys get appointed from some previous position anyway, which is why term limits will never work.
