Georgia 15 dead in Albany, despite the courageous efforts of first responders One last piece of awful news Who am I kidding? In the meantime, drown your sorrows in the least depressing place on Earth- a casino! Georgia legal! Maybe. Probably. NFL jackwagons won’t let Mayor Reed show the Superb Owl in the Dome “No County for Vile Men” is pretty good Governor Deal visits Fort Gordon Legislative preview, courtesy of the ITP crowd “Applebee’s racial slur case” should probably be called “dude pulled a gun on a guy” case Lesser Places Breathe. On the other hand, INVADE CHICAGO Wall, soundtrack already provided. I’d heartily recommend you buy the whole album, and make Charlie pay for it And the much-vaunted “Muslim ban,” which is actually increased restrictions on visa holders and halt on refugees from seven countries between Iran and Libya David Brooks has some thoughts, for whatever that’s worth Megan McArdle also has thoughts, and hers are less about confirming her priors And with all that, one last deep sigh, one I’ll be thinking about for years: The Cautionary Tale of Samantha Power And a shot of joy for the road: three puppies were rescued from rubble in Italy. Keep your heads, everyone. Things can’t continue at this tone for long. Wait, I want to be open and collegial because we’re told we have to put on a happy face and work with the new regime, so strike that and let me ask, more what? January 25, 2017 8:44 AM Log in to Reply Andrew C. Pope More of what? More petty fights about inaugural crowd sizes? More cheerleaders packed into the front rows of a speech at the CIA? More news stories about how he’s peddling an outright lie about voter fraud? More hookers peeing on mattresses? Certainly not more jobs… The Obama Administration saved over a million jobs with the auto industry bailout, that’s in addition to the over 800,000 manufacturing jobs saved/created over the course of the administration. January 25, 2017 8:50 AM Log in to Reply auh2o America first…No TPP, exec orders on wall, mid east refugees on hold, funding cut to sanctuary cities, conservative supreme nominee next week, dow 20k. And it’s just 1030 am. Who knows what comes after lunch January 25, 2017 10:24 AM Log in to Reply Andrew C. Pope TPP – How does ceding leadership in Asia/Pacific trade to China put America First? How does lessening IP protections for American companies and opposing streamlining of supply chains help American companies and consumers? Wall – Has Trump indicated how we’re paying for the wall before Mexico cuts that reimbursement check? Given the GOP’s criticism of Obama-era deficits, I’m curious. MidEast Refugees – What would Jesus say about caring for refugees and why does Trump want to make it harder for Syrian and Iraqi Christians to escape ISIS? Sanctuary cities – Doesn’t cutting funding to major cities (including funding for law enforcement) make it harder to stop the “carnage” taking place in those cities? Should we expect Trump to “send in the Feds” like he promised to do in Chicago? Given the GOP’s concern with the threat of Obama instituting martial law, I’m curious. SCOTUS – Shouldn’t we withhold appointing a Supreme Court justice until after a President is elected with a plurality of the vote? Americans clearly sent a message that they wanted someone else to pick the Supreme Court nominee. After all, according to Sen. McConnell, we’re fine with 8 justices. Dow – The Dow was at $7,949 when Obama took office on 1/20/2009. The Dow closed at $19,742 on 1/19/2017. Please explain how a 300 point increase is somehow “more” than what Obama accomplished in his 8 years. January 25, 2017 10:45 AM Log in to Reply gcp Dow decreased approximately 9.69% from 11/10/2008 to 01/23/2009 while it increased 6.51 between 11/10/2016 and 01/23/2017. As to most other issues I will wait for details. January 25, 2017 6:34 PM Andrew C. Pope The Dow went down during the financial crisis and up during the Obama Recovery? Shocker. January 25, 2017 8:14 PM gcp It shows markets reacted positively to Trump’s election and negatively to Obama’s election. January 25, 2017 9:49 PM Andrew C. Pope If we’re picking arbitrary end points, I’ll point out that, in the two months prior to Obama’s election in 2008, the Dow dropped 20%. Again, because arbitrary end points are fun, I’ll remind you the Dow went up 148% under Obama and only 1.6% under Trump. I guess I’m just surprised Donald Trump would inherit something and then pretend as if he built it. January 26, 2017 6:51 AM gcp The issue here is the post election rally and its close to 7% under Trump. It may not last long but it’s impressive by any standard. Not sure where you get “1.6% under Trump”. January 26, 2017 9:19 AM gcp It shows markets reacted positively to the election of Trump and negatively to the election of Obama. January 25, 2017 9:51 PM Benevolus As if the stock market reaction is something worthy. Anyway, I think the expectation has been that Trump would be good for Big Business, so yeah, they will be salivating right about now. On the other hand, all this isolationist talk and action might put a bit of a damper on that. Maybe they (investors in Big Business) think they will be able to mitigate the damage that would do to profits. We shall see. January 26, 2017 8:11 AM gcp I am also concerned about his trade policies but I will wait for details before I criticize. ” As if the stock market reaction is something worthy”. If you got investments in the market you should be concerned about “market reaction”, particularly long term. (Using the word improvement would imply, well improvement.) Tim Lee’s departing gift to 300,000 Cobb households is that they each write a $50 check to a billionaire for the pleasure of congestion. In the words of Bloomberg, the Braves play taxpayers better than they play ball. January 25, 2017 9:49 AM Log in to Reply Dave Bearse The AJC reported Trump is down to three candidates for nomination to the Supreme Court. Should a nomination to an independent branch of government wait until it can be made by a President that won a plurality of votes? January 25, 2017 9:52 AM Log in to Reply Bart Sure Dave just as soon as we have a new law requiring popular vote to be the deciding factor in presidential elections. Until then, it doesn’t matter. January 25, 2017 12:59 PM Log in to Reply Ellynn Thankfully we had a law that said we had to wait until the next election to have a hearing for court nominations. There are so many “dude pulled a gun on a guy” cases at the moment, you need other facts to clarify which one is which. Examples – have had “juveniles at Island’s Shell”, “drunk tourist on Bay” “couple robbed in City Market”, “Florida couple attacked in Forsyth”, “Iowa couple attacked at Forsyth”, “Two men held up in Forsyth”, “Students robbed at south end of Forsyth”, Savannah State students held at gunpoint”, “Elderly man attacked for $10”, “Elderly man beaten in parking lot”, “District resident killed walking with wife in his neighborhood”, “Gang tasks force revenge killing” (which makes it sound like the task force did the revenge killing instead of it being a federal RICO case) “gunfire outside Collins Quarters” and “Late night fight at Applebee’s”. Everyone one of these started as “dude pulled a gun on a guy.” January 25, 2017 10:09 AM Log in to Reply Benevolus If there were more guns around this wouldn’t happen. January 25, 2017 10:23 AM Log in to Reply Saltycracker “Applebee’s racial slur” …..So when it happens on your sidewalk the headlines could be Ellynn’s racial slur ? I would object on your behalf and demand they make it Cheesehead’s………😎 January 25, 2017 12:14 PM Log in to Reply Ellynn First of all, I have never issued a racial slur knowingly in my life. Second, I have been told by my brother I am the one and only person in America who should never be allowed to carry a firearm based on my ability to hit a boat directly behind me while aiming at a target 50 feet in front of me, (he’s confident the NRA will support this ban) so I don’t carry for the safety of all around me. Thus, the chances of my pulling out a gun in a heated argument while screaming a racial slur while extremely drunk (which would take a lot of really bad rum to make that even possible) are very very slim. Even so, the headline (if I was the defendant) would most likely read “Little Girl Case” with sub headline” Man injured – called grown woman ‘little girl’ one too many times. Defense claims incident justifiable”. If I was the victim, “Eye Rolling Cheesehead case” with sub headline “Sarcasm going over assailant’s head results in frustrated encounter” January 25, 2017 1:37 PM Log in to Reply Saltycracker “Never issued a racial slur” – “over the head” sarcasm was, neither has Applebee’s……. January 25, 2017 3:46 PM Log in to Reply Ellynn I did catch that… However; the legal name is Applebee’s. Thus Applebees or Applebee would still be incorrect. January 25, 2017 1:59 PM Log in to Reply Benevolus I don’t know but I can guess: – I think elections are a state thing. – First he says the election is rigged, then he says it’s legit, now he says it’s not. Are we going to have an investigation every time he feels slighted? – If he’s got evidence to support his claim he should definitely turn it over to the appropriate authority. Otherwise, this is BS. Fake news you might say. – If he wants to dump a bunch of money on the states so they can clean up their voter rolls then he don’ need no stinkin’ investigation to do that. – One can easily speculate how this goes: The “illegals” are perceived to be in ‘blue’ states; blue states get investigated; blue states voter rolls get purged en masse. (False premise but so what.) I’m not sure the federal executive branch can really compel the states on this issue. The Constitution gives this authority to the states and the Congress. January 25, 2017 3:18 PM Log in to Reply bethebalance that line is simplistic pandering that gets ’em drinkin the kool aid. a nation is defined foremost by its people. by its culture. so many other more important things. political boundaries are a small piece, resulting from the intermittent historical conflict or agreement between neighboring peoples. so DJT is just using the border as a political football, monopolizing on feelings of stress and conflict. What makes America great is not that we can build good fences, even if that’s what must be done. as for nations without borders, there’s plenty of those, too, like “Iroquois Nation”, a phrasing used by our founding Colonialists to describe a people bound by identity but with unfixed political borders. and what abt the Nation of Islam? political kool aid.
