Morning Reads for Friday, April 15, 2016
It’s normally Tax Day, but not really. Because Washington DC gets a holiday the rest of us don’t, us peasants get to keep our sad little pennies another day or two. Unless you live in Maine or Massanocluesetts. Then you get another day to file.
- That’s not how any of this works.
- Surprise! United Health Care leaving the Georgia Obamacare market after massive losses.
- That’s a half mil, peasants.
UnIntended consequences? Who knows. Tired of the Braves already.- IRS says “not my job, man.” Unfortunately, NOT The Onion.
- Not as secret as you think it’s secret.
- JV team.
- We all know people like this.
- ZoomZoom.
- World’s largest chain of human dominoes.

Washington taking a holiday that the rest of us are not entitled to should not come as any surprise.
Then again, one less work day in D.C. is probably a good thing for us. One less day to wreak havoc.
Saw part of the Hilly/Burnie shouting match last night. When Burn was asked how he would break up the big banks he strangely said he would allow them to “break themselves up.” Hilly could not name any legislation she sponsored to prevent the ’08 collapse but she said she “called them out” (banks and Wall St).
Both again talked about “mass incarceration.” They argued over who was stronger on gun control.
As usual Burnie reminded us that Hilly voted for the Iraq war. Hilly unsuccessfully tried to defend her dysfunctional foreign policy in Libya, Syria…. Burnie has it easy on foreign policy because he has no foreign policy.
Hilly said she won’t release her speeches until other candidates release their speeches. Burnie continues to say he has not released his full tax returns because wife Jane has been “busy.”
Audience was loud and obnoxious (similar to a Repub debate). Hilly won the debate, but not by much.
gcp, I also endured the 2 hour battle of wannabe Cocoon stars (damn, I thought the GOP could put forth some old farts but dems win the AARP battle this time).
Hard to believe Bernie didn’t mention Hillary’s $200K + speech to Verizon brass while chastising the company repeatedly. Big time missed opportunity. And Hillary lost again by avoiding the speech transcript question despite Dana Bash asking at least 3 times.
My conclusion, we’re screwed if either wins and we’re screwed if either of the GOP frontrunners win. So we’re screwed, nothing left to do but enjoy the ride!
Agree, we got bad choices. I won’t vote for either of the Democrats. Most likely I will unenthusiastically vote for the Repulican nominee.
Paul Ryan and the House GOP were all over Dems when budget legislation was not enacted in timely fashion. All we’ll now hear from the establishment GOP, in between support for Cruz, the guy that prodded the House to shut down government over the budget, is crickets.
And, speaking of DUIs, here’s a reminder that oral arguments in Birchfield v. North Dakota (et al, consolidated) will be heard by SCOTUS next Wednesday.
“Issue: Whether, in the absence of a warrant, a state may make it a crime for a person to refuse to take a chemical test to detect the presence of alcohol in the person’s blood.”

UHC has been sending out alarms ever since Obama said set premiums low and his reserve fund will bail out any shortfalls (ridiculous that the GOP said were coming) and then filings came in for $2.8 billion on a $300m fund. Rubio said that’s all we got and the Demos who previously said the fund will never be in jeopardy while requiring insurance be sold to the sick and the healthy can take a pass now have another tune. They will blame the GOP for messing up the program by not bailing the insurance companies out.
UHC already announced they will quit selling Obamacare policies in Ga. and Arkansas next year. Similarly Blue Cross says they are losing money in NC but it’s unknown if they will exit that market.

Wonder what home insurance would cost if the option for many was you didn’t have to buy it until the house was on fire ?
Or buy car insurance after an accident.
Let us all take a moment to wipe the collective tears as we weap for UHC or BCBS of GA’s losses…okay, that was nice.
You wanna know the best way to risk pool? Try it with 318M people.
+318m……..when mandated only a portion will be paying premiums by today’s standards and it will still be in trouble…….it will take mandating and big changes to make it work.
“Keep our sad little pennies” ? A panhandler won’t accept or pick them up from the curb but the Feds keep on making them to keep a metal supplier thriving. Speaking of having a good lobbyist.
The post office must be doing great to reduce the price of a stamp. My bet is a six figure study told them reducing the price will kick start first class mail and crush e-communication. How about scheduled residential delivery once a week and $0.50 @ first class ? Want more, pay more.
The penny should have been eliminated in 1982 when they had to quit making them out of copper. With copper prices back down now it isn’t as high but at one point the melt value of a copper penny was a nickel.
Congress plays like USPS is independent until they want to do something responsible like eliminating Saturday delivery. Then they turn around and rail against them for losing money… And the beat goes on.
Very pleased with one Mr. G. Chidi’s announcement today. I am not a Dekalb resident but watch the county government shenanigans from afar (Cobb). Its well past time for a change in Dekalb and I hope that change is hastened by your presence on/election to the County Commission.
Well good luck with this threat: Saudis will sell $750 billion in US Assets if Congress passes a bill blaming any of their officials for 9-11 –
For openers they manage or own many of our seaports and our biggest oil refineries…….more bad news is China and Clin-Ton would be deliriously happy and fire sale buying while donating to the foundation.
