Morning Reads for Friday, March 4, 2016
There was another of those GOP debate things last night. Did you watch? I didn’t.
- Find of a lifetime.
- Pass the Zyrtec.
- Ghosts of Sessions Past, or something.
- The Year of Georgia Music.
- Oh my. Trouble in Texas.
- See ya. Don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out.
- Faster, please.
- Well, at least one industry is booming.
- Primaries have consequences.
- A possible scrap of airplane wreckage. Hey, CNN, why aren’t we seeing this 24/7?
- You’re getting warmer!
- Fascinating.

I watched but I was too busy measuring my hands to take it into concurrence. Now excuse me while I do some yoga.
What I learned from the debate last night is that a Trump presidency would be a terrible danger to America, the world, the conservative movement, and the gop, and every other candidate would support him if he’s the nominee.
What I do not understand is how the GOP establishment pushed Rubio when in his own state he only has a 30 percent favorable over Kasich who has a 70 percent favorable? Rubio unfavorable are north of 50 percent! You wonder why he is down 24 points? Now the GOP brain trust will spend a ton of money, and Rubio will not win. Would not logic tell you that Rubio would not have a chance to win his own state? How do you win a nomination, and not win your own state? The brain trust in the GOP needs to do a real mirror check!
“The brain trust in the GOP…”
John, you’re making an assumption there that as of late has shown to be unfounded.
Seriously, I did not know until today, that Rubio was so unpopular in Florida, did you? I would of made that comment when I first saw it. It really seems like the GOP brain trust are playing checkers with a blind fold on.
Many of the Florida bloggers I know don’t care for him. The only one I know that is firmly in his camp is one who shares the multi-generational Cubano heritage.
Do they not like Rubio as a presidential candidate or do they not even like him as their US Senator?
He hasn’t been a senator since announcing for president. Who can blame Florida residents for disapproving of a guy who doesn’t show up for work yet keeps collecting his paycheck. If Rubio was just a regular GS##, he would be charged with fraud.
Rubio is so unpopular Gov. Scott will not endorse him. I only heard this today, still scratching my head? Think about it, you have Gov. Kasich with a 70 percent approval rating who surprised everyone in NH, and the brain trust went with Rubio? Please someone tell me what the GOP establishment was thinking?
…..Rick Scott‘s favorable ratings have tanked to just 38 percent, according to a new Public Policy Polling survey released on Tuesday. However, he’s not the worst-ranked Republican elected statewide in Florida.
That would be the state’s junior U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, the presidential candidate who is only at 31 percent support, with 55 percent opposing him……

Read Fareed Zakaria today. The GOP and its affiliates and supporters have been stoking hellfire for the last 20 years. Now they’re getting burned.
“Here is a much simpler explanation for Donald Trump: Republicans have fed the country ideas about decline, betrayal and treason. They have encouraged the forces of anti-intellectualism, obstructionism and populism. They have flirted with bigotry and racism. Trump merely chose to unashamedly embrace all of it, saying plainly what they were hinting at for years. In doing so, he hit a jackpot.”

I’d say whoever Zacharia stole that article from is absolutely spot on. I had given up believing in karma where it concerned politics….guess I just needed to be patient.
No sane Republican or Democrat should find any pride in our political situation. Don’t know what was worse last night the idiots in the audience, the “probing” commentators or the contestants out of control at a blue light bridal gown sale.
At least Cruz got in the truth that the “wall” is nothing more than symbolism over substance. And has a flat tax that might work. But no one heard.
Hillary has to feel like a buzzard on a rotting carcass in the middle of a hot South Georgia road, telling her comrades, it don’t get no better than this. Let’s feast on America.
I couldn’t stand the bickering over each other while the Ohio observer in the corner kept crying I can do it, pick me, pick me. Turned it off.
Debate summary:
Trumpet. Loser. Flip-flops, name calling, inconsistencies. Gave incorrect Medicare numbers, misnamed a general, unexplained deficit plan, Democrat campaign contributions, Trump University, clothing made in China…but the Trumpeteers still love him.
Rubio. Just ok. Correctly stated private sector creates jobs, challenged Trumpet on his China clothing business and hiring foreign workers in Fla.
Kasich. Tiresome. Talks about his record. The “military expert” wants a “significant” number of US troops in Mideast. Still running for vp.
Cruz. Pretty good. Explained tax plan. Was rational. Said marriage is a state issue.
Moderators started weak but got better as the debate continued. Audience was loud/obnoxious/distracting.
Did it not bother you Cruz keeps saying he will “abolish the IRS” with a flat tax, could not answer how the taxes will be collected? I actually support his VAT/NST in replacement of payroll taxes, but how does that, and a flat tax end the IRS?
Yes, and the moderator called him on that point but even Cruz knows there must be a collection/enforcement agency. Cruz just does not want to call that agency the IRS.
His platform would be better described as “change to a flat, simpler tax.”
And end payroll taxes and replace them with a consumption tax. Not sure Cruz has the right tax level, but in concept I agree with the plan, and have proposed it for years.
Cruz will put the post card tax collection in the Treasury Dept.
To add the IRS is over 100,000 employees and the biggest group in the Treasury Dept. probably 2/3rds and the management of revenue will stay with Treasury as always.
Hey, changing names to Metropolitan Pkwy worked for Stewart Ave.
2 time loser and author of ObamaRobertsCare Mitt Romney attacking Trump only serves to solidify supporters of the target. Keep it up Mitt. If you had attacked Obama like this 4 years ago, you might be seeking re-election instead of barking from the sidelines at a member of your own party.
ACP, The flaw was the candidate who could not go after the incumbent on the biggest issue of that election, healthcare. Granted the GOP base chose him so much of the blame is on them. But in the end, Obama could have been beaten in either election if McCain or Romney had actually campaigned against him.
Now Mittless is announcing that he will not support the GOP nominee if his name is Trump. Good, keep saying it. The more they fight the inevitable, the more likely it becomes.
ACP, He wasn’t challenged by the nominee because Mitt fathered the Obama health plan as Obama pointed out often including during one debate. Mitt is truly a hypocrite, but even he couldn’t pull that off.
Agreed…Trump made a claim that Romney should have won “easily” in 2012, but given how the Electoral College math favors the Democrats—as in the 18 states (242 combined electoral votes) that have voted Democratic in the last 6 presidential elections (not to mention the 3 states—Iowa, New Hampshire and New Mexico—that have voted Democratic 5 of the last 6 contests)—no victory can be said to come “easy” for the GOP nominee this fall ,no matter who that may be. I suspect if the race boiled down to Trump and Cruz for Republicans, the former would win as Cruz has next to no appeal among non-evangelicals. And after March 15, the South is largely done with the nomination process, and the primaries shift to territory not so evangelical for Cruz. If Cruz were the nominee, it would be hard to see him improving over the 206 electoral votes Romney got last time.
A contested convention would be a disaster of epic proportions. I realize there are many that gravely dislike Trump, as they should, but it would be the destruction of the GOP to go against the will of the people IF Trump is the leader come convention time. You cannot protect the voter from him/herself no more than you can protect them with stricter gun laws.
If Trump has the votes I doubt there is much they can do about it. If he doesn’t have the votes, then maybe it depends on where the delegates for the 3rd place candidate go. If it’s Trump/Cruz/Rubio, who gets most of Rubio’s delegates? And what does Rubio get in return for steering his delegates in a certain direction?
The weird thing is that the GOP delegate selection setup, I think, is about binding the delegates and not selecting them. So unlike the Democrats, where Clinton and Sanders each have a list of pledged delegates, and if they get enough votes their picks are the ones that go (so that there is some loyalty from delegation to candidate), the GOP’s setup is that the delegates are standard, but bound on the first ballot to the specified candidate. (Basically, instead of Trump people being at the convention instead of party regulars, your delegates are party regulars that have to vote Trump in round 1.) After that, they can vote wherever. It seems a recipe for all hell to break loose if you go to the second ballot.
Voters select 155 delegates tomorrow in primaries in Louisiana and caucuses in Kansas, Kentucky, and Maine. Sunday, Puerto Rico selects 23 delegates in their primary. That total is greater than what’s at risk in Marco’s last stand (99 in Florida) and Kasich’s quest for relevance (66 in Ohio).
If georgiapol will spring for my expenses, I’ll be glad to cover the PR primary and even submit a report when I get back, probably late next week, depending.
I used to have one of those Jack-in-the-box things but GW Bush popped out. I need to find that thing. May be worth some money on eBay.
Trump decides to campaign instead of speak at CPAC – http://www.politico.com/blogs/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results/2016/03/donald-trump-cpac-2016-220263
Probably a smart move, nothing to be gained by going to Nashville instead of campaigning in Kansas and Florida.
The gun manufacturers (not the NRA) have to be conflicted on who to donate to. If the democrats win their sales will skyrocket and any bills will be watered down.
Hillary vs. Trump, BLM vs WLM, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy are dead.
What about Tom Mix?
The rumors alone spurred from the current administration should have the guns and ammo market saturated. Not keeping up with the pulse of these things or possessing prepper logic I was shocked when I couldn’t buy .22LR ammo a couple of years ago, even more so with the price once I did find some.
Charlie, it’s Saturday and trump looks to be losing at least two at this point. Can you put up a thread to discuss?
