Morning Reads for Monday January 25th
We hope you survived what’s becoming known as #Snowzilla or #snowmaggedon2016. In Washington, they got one of the worst storms ever, and Speaker Paul Ryan let the country watch it with a live video from the Speaker’s balcony. God help anyone who didn’t get enough bread and milk to make it through.
The reads continue after the jump.
Differing opinions on medical marijuana, craft beer and teacher pay for performance reflect the priorities of top Gold Dome Republicans in year six of the Deal administration.
Now that the governor and Georgia DOT have gone public with 18-month and 10-year plans for road and highway improvements, rural legislators fear there is too much for Atlanta and not enough for the rest of the state.
In an op-ed in Sunday’s Savannah Morning News, Governor Deal’s Education Study Commission Chair Charles Knapp tries to set the record straight about the commission’s recommendations, especially regarding teacher merit pay.
State Rep. John Pezold of Fortson sat down for an interview with the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. In the resulting video, Pezold explains why the relationship between Democrats and Republicans in Georgia is different than what you see in Washington, and how his conservatism makes limiting government important.
Throughout the summer and fall, right-wing talk show hosts stoked the anger of the GOP base by promoting Donald Trump as a conservative. That was fine until the conservatives for hire realized he might actually get the nomination.
A portrait of the people that will vote in the presidential primaries sharing their hopes, fears and frustrations.
A little more than a week away from the Iowa caucuses, Republican candidates are courting the evangelicals that make up so much of the voters. Problem is there are seven types of evangelicals, and they support different candidates. Meanwhile, in the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders has the support of Killer Mike, Big Boi, Bun B, and Lil B, who are much cooler than Hillary Clinton supporters Snoop Dogg, Usher and Waka Flocka Flame.
Denver edges out New England for the AFC Championship, 20-18, while Carolina trounced Arizona 49-15. Call it the Waffle House advantage.

The author of the Outset op-ed is outraged that cons-for-hire aren’t as outraged as he is about what he thinks is outrageous. Just how old is that guy?
Funniest line: “Trump forced out conservative governors like Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal, and Rick Perry.” Yeah, that’s the ticket.
He states that he is a youngster. Jingoist populism is not the exclusive reserve of us geezers. But how myopic do you need to be to not see that Bobby Jindal wouldn’t have even carried Louisiana?
The idea of Bobby Jindal far exceeded the reality of Bobby Jindal.
He’s one I had great hopes for several years ago. His shelf life caught up to him when the oil bubble burst, and about that time he did a full flip flop on Common Core. School Choice and the state’s role was one of his strong suits. Instead, he ran away from a large part of what made him stand out because of the panic that the people who still don’t want to learn what CC is and isn’t started.
With the caucuses and primaries starting next week I think we should start a prediction thread. The winner gets bourbon. On Charlie of course. Here are my predictions for the first three. I’m going with order and not percent.
Iowa:
1) Cruz
2) Trump
3) Rubio
4) Bush
5) Carson
6) who cares
New Hampshire:
1) Trump
2) Rubio
3) Cruz
4) Kasich
5) Bush
6) Who cares
South Carolina:
1) Rubio
2) Cruz
3) Trump
4) Bush
5) who cares
Perhaps we’ll bump this up to a front page post/question later in the week. Having a busy Monday thus far.
That said, I’ll go ahead and say I expect the field to be small enough by the time we get to SC that I’m not sure 4th matters – because I will be shocked if there’s more than one of Rubio/Jeb/Christie/Kasich still in the race at that point.
I also know NH likes to surprise and the polls tend to move after NH. I’ll save any additional predictions (which I openly admit I suck at) for later.
Trump runs the table on all three.
If snow or ice threatens to keep me tethered I typically run out for beer and propane.
Somewhat substantial opinion from SCOTUS this morning. In a 6-3 decision in Montgomery v Louisiana, the Court held that it has jurisdiction to review the Louisiana Supreme Court’s decision, and it reversed that court’s decision refusing to give retroactive effect to Miller v. Alabama in cases of state collateral review.
What does that mean? It means additional limitations on life sentences for youthful criminals, thousands of which now have sentences deemed unconstitutional. SCOTUSblog’s Lyle Denniston with commentary here.

SCOTUSblog…I think I came down with a case of that after a trip to Paraguay back in the ’80’s.
Just wanted to give you kudos on your continuing SCOTUS updates (here and formerly at PP). Do you post for SCOTUSblog?
