Morning Reads – Wednesday, December 12, 2018
So, it’s a Wednesday. I think we can all be happy that we aren’t the new Chief of Staff for President Trump.
- Governor-Elect Kemp – “it’s time to put politics behind us”.
- J. Harold Shepherd, co-founder of the Shepherd Center, has passed.
- Two votes people… two freaking votes.
- The other Georgia doesn’t like Bridget. They think she is too hung up on the ex… President.
- Iran doesn’t like the other Georgia too much.
- A former VP of Starwood talks about the breach.
- Roughly the same number of people blame the media and Trump for a breakdown of civility in politics.
- What is the future of space exploration?

What will the future of exploring space will be like?
December 1901 was the first transatlantic radio transmission. So, rounded 1901 to 2019 or roughly 118 years’ radio transmissions have been traveling out into space at the speed of light.
How far have we traveled?
Our closest star Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light years away so they don’t know that Donald Trump is president just yet.
Next, we have Vega which is 25 light years away. Vegans think Bill Clinton is president. Then at 75 light years we have Upsilon Aquarii which is in the Constellation Aquarius and we are still fighting World War II. At 120 light years, you make it to Dubhe in the Big Dipper, Ursa Major. They must wait 2 more year before they hear anything from us. The first thing they hear in 2 years will be Marconi transmitting “Can you hear me now” in Morse Code.
To put this in perspective to get to the center of the Milky way the distance is 24–28.4 kilolight-years or 24,000 to 28,400 light years away.
Summary, it is not just our own imagination but technology that limits us. For now and near future, we will just be exploring our own solar system…We need warp drive now Scotty!
Dig it.
The more aliens that hear us, the more we will just cement our reputation as the dumbest planet in the galaxy.
Further on that is the idea that more advance beings take a hands off approach because its foolish to risk transfer of technology to feuding beings that are fouling their own nest. There won’t be significant contact unless and until interstellar travel is likely possible.
The late Oran Nicks, talking about his book about the early space probes; Frank “Red” Rowsome was head of NASA’s technical book section:
“Red had many years of technical writing experience, and he specialized in explaining technical subjects simply and clearly. Furthermore, he knew the facts, the people, and incidents we were to write about almost as well as I.
Red and I believed that the lunar and planetary spacecraft were the first sophisticates of a new age of machines and that people would want to know more about how they were created, how they worked, and what they did. So many activities occurred in such a few years that memories were becoming blurred, and might soon be erased completely, unless someone tried to write them down. We were fortunate to have been a part of those special events, and we felt obligated to share them, if possible.”

Speaking of which, what ever happened to your idol, Hogg? Given up your guns yet, Sniv?
What is your workable solution to prevent these? @Andrew
There are many ways to impact this problem. It’s been done many times in many places. There is plenty of expert analysis of ways to address.
The better question is what will the NRA types not say “nyet” to.
I find no workable solutions in your comment.
Who gets to decide what is workable?
In this situation he does. You didn’t say squat. As usual.
I am no expert so my opinion doesn’t count for much, but it’s not hard to find many expert suggestions for things to do:
http://time.com/5209901/gun-violence-america-reduction/
https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=gun+control+solutions&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/2/21/17028930/gun-violence-us-statistics-charts
I would imagine that these would be arbitrarily deemed ‘unworkable’ by those who don’t really want to do anything about it.
No need to be an expert in order to have an informed opinion and discuss things rationally.
I would say from those links that the fix NICS is something that is needed. If govt. is in the background check business, govt should be responsible for a mistake that allowed a prohibited person from getting a gun.
The 21 age requirement might have stopped the Florida shooting but as the article states ” According to FBI reports, handguns were responsible for 90% of homicides in 2016.” A person must already be 21 purchase a handgun so I don’t know how much of a difference that will ultimately make.
The gun show loophole does not exist. Universal background checks
and a ban on private sales is what is proposed here. I don’t know of any data that says how many crimes are committed by a used gun purchased from a private seller. It may happen, I don’t really know how frequently. My own conversations with felons indicated that they bought guns from others that were stolen in the first place.
You simply cannot buy a gun on the internet legally and have it shipped to you without going through a licenced dealer.
Consider this. Before 1968, you could buy about any firearm except full autos that you wanted and have it mailed to you without ANY restrictions or background checks. My point is that guns sale were much less regulated then. Yes, you could buy an AR through the mail. Guns really haven’t changed. Has society changed?
Are we less civil?
Is the nuclear family a bygone thing?
Are parenting skills adequate?
Has entertainment gone beyond entertainment and become mind poisoning?
Are antidepressants and antipsychotics hurting or helping?
One man’s gun control is another’s infringement. There are no easy answers that I can find.
My take: forget about regulating guns. There is culture of violence that will never allow this to happen. And…they have a constitutional amendment to misinterpret that gives them a basis in law.
Instead, regulate ammunition. Make the purchase of ammo as hard and as rare as possible and you”ll solve the problem because all the ammo on the street today has a shelf life. So the carnage will continue for another ten years and then you”ll have to make your own (which can be very dangerous) or be subjected to rigorous rules for purchasing anymore.
Seconded.

Not a practical solution as it cannot be done. Also, loading your own ammunition is less dangerous than most of the things we do on a daily like driving a vehicle.
Why can’t ammo be regulated?
Because “Deplorables ” like me will throw any pol who tries that out on their butts.
The is no right to keep and bare ammo. It is regulated now and can be further regulated. Since most ammo will become unstable over time the sooner we regulate the quicker the day will come when can reduce mass shootings.
Funny but with a point! He’s right about raising the price of a bullet since everything comes to money. Make shooting people hard and expensive and let capitalism do its thing.
Texting and driving…more deaths than guns. Ban cell phones. Horrible video games leading the little crumb crunchers to have little regard for life. They have to contribute to school shootings. Ban them.
Divorces break apart families….ban them.
Chris Rock is funny! Liberals are too. Too bad libs are serious. Gregs, here is an even better idea that is right up your alley!
<
ol>
Well since that might not concur I am sure I can get the liberal goobers to agree to raise the price of gas to $8 in America just like in France and create riots right here in the US! Now we will actually have conservatives rioting like the libs do! Hell screw France. We can outLib the French Libs! Lets raise it to $100 a gallon! Great idea! Obama himself said he wanted to raise the price of fossil fuels to save the freaking planet!
Now the libs can say they are saving lives because of no car accidents since no one can afford to drive AND they save the planet from CO2 emissions! If they ride horses they will be shocked to find out the the carbon foot print or a horse is WAY MORE than a car! Ruh row George! Plus horrific waste problems, water contamination etc…
https://oppositelock.kinja.com/co2-emissions-are-stupid-the-horse-calculation-1736008830
Why not raise it to $5000 a gallon like Chris Rock suggested —like the price of a bullet!
Just think libs, you can save the planet and lives too!! That makes more sense than anything Bernie Sanders, Cortez and Al Gore have come up with. There is your green platform!
I am sure Gregs will have to agree with this on right?!
I am also hugely concerned about the obesity problem and all of the health problems associated with it. I am a concerned converted liberal….I want to ban all foods and restaurants that serve foods that contribute to the obesity epidemic. That goes for beverages too. No more Cokes, beer and wine. Liquor too! No fried chicken, no soul food…there goes the black vote!
Ban it all. No just tax it to death…like taxpayers.
We should ban all beverage other than water and consumer only leafy green vegetables! The liberal vegans should be ecstatic! 2 massive problems that kill 100x more than guns will be solved— and liberals get to control even more of your lives. And you are going to like it!!
Nothing we do is going to be perfect. But we can be better. Some things we do may have little to no effect for many years. But we have to do something, and even small steps are probably better than no steps. It’s not like we are going to make some drastic mistake because no one has ever done this before. There is plenty of data to get started, but further study in the US would be a good thing too.
In 1996, Congress, with a push from the NRA, passed the Dickey Amendment–named after its author, former Republican Representative Jay Dickey from Arkansas–which mandated that no CDC funds could be spent on research that “may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” Congress also cut $2.6 million from the CDC budget, which was equal to the federal agency’s expenditure on firearm-injury research the prior year.
govt should be responsible for a mistake that allowed a prohibited person from getting a gun.
No. Well, what does “responsible” mean? They pay a fine? What’s the point? Anyway, no guarantee of perfection, just better.
Yeah, forget age 21. Who brought that up anyway? How about mandatory gun safety training?
“ban on private sales”. This would have to be part of the package, don’t you think? I mean, not a ban on private sales, a ban on unregulated sales.Right?
All my comments were related to the articles you posted. The age 21 came from there. You obviously did not read your own articles.
Good day.
Of course I read it. It says “Some measures, like Walmart’s lifting its minimum age for purchasing a gun from 18 to 21, may sound good but likely won’t do much to combat gun violence.” Is that what you are referring to? It (nor I) are advocating raising it to 21. Then it says “A more effective policy would require every buyer, of any age, to obtain a license that includes a registration of all purchases and at least a modest training program”, which is why I asked you about training.
A starting point would be actually studying gun violence in America.
“The CDC had not touched firearm research since 1996 — when the NRA accused the agency of promoting gun control and Congress threatened to strip the agency’s funding. The CDC’s self-imposed ban dried up a powerful funding source and had a chilling effect felt far beyond the agency: Almost no one wanted to pay for gun violence studies, researchers say. Young academics were warned that joining the field was a good way to kill their careers. And the odd gun study that got published went through linguistic gymnastics to hide any connection to firearms.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/storyline/wp/2015/01/14/why-the-cdc-still-isnt-researching-gun-violence-despite-the-ban-being-lifted-two-years-ago/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.06545757579c
Except that now it might not matter. Trump supporters can’t or won’t distinguish between lies and facts.
Let “Talks of Grabbing” begin! Wow! That was fast! Barely a month after! Thank God for a Senate, even stronger, to let that crap die!!
Trump on short notice decided to televise his meeting with Pelosi and Schumer. Trump said he could pass a House bill with $5 billion for wall funding “in two seconds”, it being “easiest of all” year end legislation. Trump said he’d be proud to shut down government unless Pelosi and Schumer agreed to fund the wall.
Brilliant strategy. I expect the crowd at Myrtle’s was beside itself with joy at how Trump owned the libs.
And how about Pence at the meeting? He participated as a potted plant, later commenting that it was a “good meeting”.

I second the objection to the misogyny.

Andrew you are right little buddy. Protecting those frail women! We all know beauty is skin deep but ugly it to the bone! Does that rhyme with drone?
Trump has the Midas Touch!!
He pays Stormy $130,000 to shut the heck up and Stormy has to pay him $350,000 in legal fees! Dang, tripling his money like that. Wait, that is what he is supposed to be impeached for right?! Aint gonna happen folks!
And that wizard Avenatti owes something like $5 million I think! Being evicted if I am not mistaken… Man and he was going to be the new lib candidate for Prez too!
At least Stormy is not going to get fat. That is a hell of a lot of table and lap dances!! Hmmm, and you know how cheap millennials like Sniv are and never tip…maybe they will give her a break!
I hate to do it but that is all worthy of an AAAAAWWWWEEEEE NNNNNNAAAAWWWWW!
LMAO!!! Thank God!!! Now I can start doing that again!
You can do it now that DTM’s done it?
Are you sure you don’t share more than a simple affinity for insults?
If DTM jumped off a bridge…
You better hope the bridge isn’t owned by TDD…
Andrew, to provide a little humor over the constant liberal whine little buddy!
Clowns generate more comments. Is that beneficial to a non-commercial… what is this, a blog?
I don’t know.
Hey Drew, how many table dances would she have to do? Better than Ginny Craig! Lol!
You have to admit Trump has the Midas Touch!!

And when you can’t change the rules fast enough, ignore ‘em. “I Don’t Care Trump Was Involved in Crimes, He’s Doing a Good Job” — GOP establishmentarian Orrin Hatch
“As long as Cohen’s a liar, I shouldn’t give much credibility to what he says,” Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa [another GOP establishmentarian], said Monday when asked about the new court filings. After a reporter pointed out that federal prosecutors were the ones making the allegations, Grassley replied, “He got his information from a liar.”
That’s cart blanche to doubt the credibility of a Republican establishment that supports serial liar Trump.
Cohen is a lawyer isn’t he? So he is always truthful! Aren’t most politicians in DC lawyers….hmmmm. Both Clinton’s are lawyers…Barak…is anyone seeing a pattern?!
You mean like Kavanaugh?
He looks like the only one that was telling the truth! Hey Dave, do you still be believe his accusers?! Be honest!
Gee, you’ve advanced from third grade I’m rubber and you’re glue to trick questions. Have you stopped beating you wife?
Dave, you didn’t answer. Do you still believe Kavanaugh’s accusers …when no one can verify any of them?
Or was it another liberal hit job ?
Kav needs to sue the dogsh•t out of Ford and the other liars involved! Feinstein included! Set up a GoFundMe page! The whole nine yards!! Make an example of the Dems!!
And that discovery would work both ways. Do it!
DTM, I didn’t answer, because as I said, yours was a trick question. Consider a yes or no answer to my question to you and you’ll understand what I mean.
Nothing “trick” about it. You either believe the women and their stories and you supposed the Dem tactics employed – or you don’t. Pretty straightforward…
You just changed the question. And I’m not referring to the addition introducing tactics..
When you figure out the answer to my question, are you still beating your wife?, you’ll understand the initial dilemma.
More on GOP credibility:
Remember when McCarthy, the House GOP second-in-command during hearing after hearing after hearing on Benghazi actually said
It’s a credible party, that’s for sure.
Do democrats hate white people? If so, why? I have not figured out that angle of hate. There are just so many of them. Thanks in advance. I hate to be profiling here, but aren’t many of not most of the active posters white? I honestly don’t care. You are still welcome to play golf with us any time. Just play fast and DONT WHINE!
That’s an ugly fantasy that Ann Coulter shared.
Made me a little nauseous.
Don’t buy it, DTM. The majority of Democrats only hate one man, and it ain’t because he’s white.
And not even all Dems agree on that, much less anything else. I often see Dem party policy based on pluralisms of interests.
What best describes the opposite of socialism?
A. Feudalism
B. Oligarchy
C. Monarchy
D. Fascism
E. Other?
In your case – “whataboutism!”
In a way, you’re not wrong.
If socialism is defined as being “social”, then whataboutism can clearly be defined as “antisocial”.
Pretty sure Manson said that’s exactly what antisocial means.
Just after stating that at least he didn’t dress like a clown like that other dude.
anti-socialism
Erickson (Butina’s boyfriend) wrote in an October 2016 email to an acquaintance that was later obtained by the FBI, “I’ve been involved in securing a VERY private line of communication between the Kremlin and key [unnamed political party] leaders through, of all conduits, the [unnamed gun-rights organization].”
So Russians were funneling money into the GOP via the NRA.

“Spanish police have turned over to the FBI wiretaps of conversations involving Alexander Torshin, a prominent Russian banker suspected of money laundering who met with President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., during the 2016 US presidential election.
When José Grinda, a Spanish prosecutor who spearheads investigations into organized crime, was asked if he was concerned about Torshin’s interactions with Trump Jr. or other American political figures, Grinda replied: “Mr. Trump’s son should be concerned.”

Do we know if the federal judge read into the record, or comment on the conclusion that Individual No. 1 was involved with Cohn in campaign fraud as noted by SDNY DOJ in its sentencing statement? If so, does, that then place the legal opinion that Individual No. 1 into the federal judicial record as a unindicted co-conspirator to Champaign Finance fraud? The AMI agreement adds additional facts to the case, beyond whatever Cohn said, and any tapes he had. The lack of facts was the issue with the Edwards case…

There’s not going to be significant rejection. In many instances it’s going to take attrition. When was the last time you heard of a Civil War states righter rejecting that the Civil War was a matter of states rights?
