Morning Reads for National Guacamole Day (September 16)
Good morning on what shouldn’t be one day, but rather everyday. One cannot have enough guacamole. Of course I’m going to give you a bit of history for guacamole in the United States. Here are some tips from Rick Bayless for making good guacamole, and here is one of my top five favorite articles from Eater ever, “A Brief History of Crimes Against Guacamole.”
Oh, yes! Thrillist has a list of places giving out free guac today, which is very important information.

Pat Conroy
- Ethics charges against former state Senate leader Don Balfour have been dropped. (Alternate link.)
- Longterm state Representative Pam Stephenson submitted her resignation to the governor last Thursday, which will set up a special election for the seat. (Alternate link.)
- USG Chancellor Steve Wrigley told the Board of Regents yesterday that we are full steam ahead with in-person classes for all 26 campuses.
- UGA has 1529 new COVID cases for 9/7/20-9/11/20, an increase from the previous week.
- The fraternities and mayor are fighting in Athens.
- An Athens man is going to jail for two years for fraudulently obtaining Masters tickets and selling them for a profit.
- Georgia counties have vastly different processes for how absentee ballots will be counted in November, which could mean delays in results.
- Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has added information to the state website to explain when the state believes felons have completed their sentences so their voting rights can be restored.

- Hurricane Sally is slowly moving inland, leaving significant flooding in its wake.
- Smoke from the wildfires in Oregon and California is approaching Europe. (Alternate link.)
- The Breonna Taylor settlement is one of the largest payouts ever linked to a police shooting.
- A newly released House report sites engineering flaws, mismanagement and oversight lapses in the Boeing 737 Max crashes. (Alternate link.)
- There is a bipartisan push in the Senate to extend the Census as counting is set to end in just two weeks.

- Los Angeles residents are living in an orange haze of smoke, which has led to the longest stretch of unhealthy air on record.

Nine unarmed Black people were killed by Police in 2020. In that same time period, thirty four Police officers were killed by gunfire. Nine Police officers were killed by vehicular assaults.
Don Balfour today, John Oxendine tomorrow. Forget about getting any money back, or even any decent accounting. We know where the money’s gone. Some pols may route their leftover campaign donations to their party or other campaigns, but even then enough stays close to home to keep them and their families comfortable.

On the social media forum of your choice, please publish the following words: “I do not believe my friends and neighbors who work at the CDC are seditious traitors to their country, and I reject those who would say so. I also believe my friends and neighbors at the CDC could use a little more support in fighting this pandemic.”
