Snellville Mayor Takes Plea Deal To Avoid Jail Time
The AJC is reporting that self-suspended Snellville Mayor Tom Witts has taken a plea deal in order to avoid jail time. The deal will close the criminal case where Mayor Witts is accused of evading taxes and using campaign money for things like cruises, plane tickets, and porn. From the AJC:
All told, Witts entered an Alford plea — which allows defendants to maintain their innocence while admitting the evidence against them would likely to lead to a conviction — to 11 of the 66 counts in his indictment.
As a part of the deal, Gwinnett County DA Danny Porter will drop the remaining 55 counts. Witts will serve six months house arrest and ten years of probation. He will also resign his position as Mayor as a condition of the probation.

I wish this had played out in court. If someone is corrupt, sunshine is the best disinfectant. This is at least the third case where Danny Porter has played God. He did it with Kevin Kenerly and Chuck Bannister. If pols are guilty let’s go to trial, if they are not , let’s go to trial so they can clear their name.
Supposedly, the mayor and his wife are battling cancer. They wanted to end this without prison and Porter agreed.
Porter use his discretion to pick winners and winners.
