Why I Support And Cast My Ballot For Brian Kemp

My preferred candidate didn’t win the Primary, but I believe we have a great candidate in Secretary of State Brian Kemp.  Brian is a down-to-earth, genuine man.  I remember when I was first elected Walker County Republican Party Chairman in August of 2009, I got a handwritten note from Brian congratulating me and giving me his personal cell number telling me “call me if you ever need anything.”  And I had to a few times regarding issues with our elections office.  He may not have known the answer right away, but he had a knowledgeable staff.

He didn’t have to be generous to offer a county chairman his direct cell.  He didn’t have to make himself accessible.  He could have made me go through his office staff to find who I needed to speak to.  I believe that shows the character of the man, and I believe that’s an important characteristic for Georgia’s next governor.

Governor Nathan Deal is leaving behind a tremendous legacy.  It’s been written about here time after time, but I believe people forget how tough things were for Georgia.  Then-Governor Sonny Perdue navigated the initial economic blow, but his successor, Governor Deal, was left with charting the waters to lead Georgia back to prosperity.

We now have a decision to make as Georgia voters: continuing the work of Governor Deal or trying something “new”.  In my book, something “new” doesn’t exactly mean it will be “better”.  In fact, the new that Brian Kemp’s opponent is offering includes rolling back the tax cuts that the Georgia General Assembly passed earlier this year.  Quite frankly, I don’t enjoy the idea of turning right around and paying more in taxes after they were cut.  Electing Republican Brian Kemp will ensure that the tax cut passed earlier this year won’t be reversed.

It’s not just taxes that Republicans have been working to keep low.  Governor Deal and our Republican leaders and legislature have kept our budget balanced (as required by the state constitution), kept our AAA bond rating through a double-dip recession, made investments in the growing entertainment and high-tech sectors, made strides in criminal justice reform, made investments in growing the transportation infrastructure not just in metro Atlanta but statewide, and plenty of others.

This will be a team effort, and I believe Brian is the man to lead that team.  Brian has been visiting all parts of the state hearing concerns from voters and delivering his vision for Georgia while his opponent has been jet-setting to pick up large donations from her out-of-state supporters.  I would rather have someone focused on the growth and prosperity of our state than someone focused on pleasing outside donors.

I have cast my General Election ballot for Brian Kemp, and I encourage you to do the same for him too.
