Rep. Handel to McBath: Prove Where You Pay Taxes
From a prepared statement provided by Rep. Karen Handel’s (R, GA-6) campaign:
“Lucy McBath has twice stated publicly that her husband is a permanent resident of Tennessee, but he has claimed a homestead exemption in Cobb County since 2002 and is registered to vote in Tennessee. Ms. McBath has also stated publicly that she moved to Tennessee “briefly” in 2016, and public records show that she voted in Tennessee that year. She didn’t vote here in last year’s special election. Further, the McBaths still have vehicles registered there. If she has indeed moved back, her cars should be registered here — according to Georgia law — and the 7% Title Ad Valorem Tax should have been paid on them.
However, there’s an even bigger question. In what state do the McBaths file their income tax returns? Tennessee does not tax personal income, while Georgia does. In Georgia, the income tax funds half our state’s annual budget. That’s funding for our schools, for law enforcement, for all the state programs we depend on. Have the McBaths been paying taxes as residents of Georgia? Or have they been dodging taxes by claiming to be residents of Tennessee?
There’s an easy way to settle this. Today, I call upon Lucy McBath to: clearly state when she moved to Tennessee and when she moved back to Georgia, explain why she continues to have vehicles registered in another state, and prove the address she and her husband use when they file their income tax returns.
Steve and I have lived in the 6th District for nearly 25 years. We have properly claimed a homestead exemption on our primary residence. Our cars are registered in Georgia, as required by Georgia law. We have paid the taxes that we have owed — on our vehicles, our property, and our incomes.
Lucy McBath’s story just doesn’t add up. Voters deserve to know if our schools and our law enforcement officers have been shortchanged.”

Polling must be bad for Handel. This sounds really defensive. Seriously a Trump apologist demanding that their opponent show their taxes when Trump still has not shown his?
Just making sure her Dem opponent isn’t a cheat.
From a supporter of massive tax cheating going on for decades? Someone who stole 7 bucks from his own charity Trump apologist Handel? This makes me laugh. Handel thinks the voters are stupid apparently.
You forget that the new standard is that cheating is OK as long as they’re on your “team”. Which makes every allegation of cheating somehow both resonate and fall flat. The bar has been lowered thanks to Trump and Trumpists, and while you can still say This is Where The Bar Should Be, it is a hollow cry when it’s your party’s foot that’s holding the bar down to begin with.
Mcbath doesnt seem to be running much of any campaign at least in this part of district. Its especially striking around here with democrats making huge pushes for Millar’s senate seat and an open state house seat. You can’t drive 2 blocks without passing half a dozen signs for Harrell and Wilensky. I think I finally saw my first McBath sign a day or 2 ago. I’m really interested to see how she does relative to Ossoff’s performance and the tons of money he spent.
If this were a legitimate qualification concern, she should take it up with the Secretary of State’s office.
Ya know, the one that Karen Handel used to work at when SHE was Secretary of State……
Since I’m guessing this ISN’T a concern, like Drew said, she’s trying to play the “you don’t even go here” card again.
And like Andrew also said, it will work! A blind hawg does root up an acorn every once in a while!
“Steve and I have lived in the 6th District for nearly 25 years.” The district lines change dramatically every ten years. In the last 25 years I have been in the 5th, 6th, and 7th districts.
FWIW, I have received two shady telephone calls. Both claim to be a survey. Both were obviously paid for by Lucy McBath.
There is lots of phone banking going on where you are given a script and asked to call voters and log their answers as to how they’ll be voting. What was shady about the calls?
You were read a series of statements about the candidates, and asked for your opinion. All of the statements were derogatory towards Mrs. Handel, and complimentary towards Mrs. McBath. It is easy to see who paid for this call.
In typical surveys, after they make those statements, they’re supposed to ask if you are more or less likely to vote for X…
Republicans don’t want taxes or government. Can’t imagine why Handel is suddenly concerned whether anyone actually pays taxes. Oh, that’s right, it is only an issue for the “other party” candidate to pay taxes.
It’s Republican credo that anything’s game to avoid taxes, even if it’s disreputable and sleazy. Like Trump valuing a property $90M when a high value was advantageous to him, then valuing that same property 18M to avoid inheritance taxes. What a dirtbag.
Since Karen is interested in people paying their taxes, she should ask Trump about his real estate tax fraud. It seems a bit more serious.
“The president’s parents, Fred and Mary Trump, transferred well over $1 billion in wealth to their children, which could have produced a tax bill of at least $550 million under the 55 percent tax rate then imposed on gifts and inheritances.
The Trumps paid a total of $52.2 million, or about 5 percent, tax records show.”

I just am so appalled at a woman devoting her career trying to deny women access to healthcare.
How can she look in a mirror?
