Election Night Banter
Secretary of State Election Results
Update 1: 8:30 p.m. – Cagle concedes
Update 2: Statement from Speaker Ralston:
“A long, hard-fought campaign for the Republican nomination for governor is now history.
Congratulations to Secretary of State Brian Kemp on a well-earned victory.
I want to also pay tribute to Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. Lt. Governor Cagle ran a tough and spirited campaign. His record of service to this party and state is exemplary and we all owe him and his family a debt of gratitude.
We have a strong, capable conservative leading the GOP ticket in Brian Kemp. I look forward to working with Secretary Kemp to unite our party and focus on winning the general election in November. For the sake of our children and their future, we must elect Brian Kemp as the 83rd Governor of the State of Georgia.”

This is over. This has to be beyond embarrassing for Casey.
For anyone who ever wants to run for office take note. This is what happens when you think you deserve a seat because you waited your turn and you play things safe. Say what you will about Kemp’s campaign. He did not play it safe.
I think those leaked conversations made plenty of ppl sick, too.
Yep, and anybody who works in media or audio digital knows that editing a recording is a piece of cake today. Tightening phrases, cutting and splicing a person’s words is done every day. So what was publicized of Tippins’ sneaky recording may not have been what was actually said. But what was publicized sure did turn off a lot of people.
Damn, you’re stupid. Wow. Just wow.
Why did this make me think of the Simpsons episode where Homer is accused of sexually harassing the babysitter?
Our presumptive Governor pointed a shotgun at a teenager in a political ad. Incredible.
Kemp 63-37. Ten percent in. Anyone doubting Trump’s influence better think again. Agee with Eiger. Embarrassing…
Dang, Noway is right again. I wonder if he might be related to Nostradamus! Noway, what lottery numbers should I play tonight? Maybe I should look at the numbers on the phone and spell out T-R-U-M-P! Looks like 87867.
Do it!!
Actually, i have a stock picking subscription website and for FiveHundred a month, you too, can access my picks!!
Sign me up for a charter subscription! Buylowsellhigh.com would be a great website!
Perfect Fantasy Five pick!
Are you guys too stupid to even understand how the lottery works?
Doc, I guess can tell I don’t play the lottery…sorry!….You must have a lot of experience doing so! Do tell Noway, Downthemiddle and the rest of us that don’t waste our money playing, how you play yo’ numbers every night!! And tell us which one is your lucky gas station you use so we I go to get my malt liquor and Cool cigarettes, I don’t have to get behind you and wait 10 minutes to check out!!
I grew up around horse racing, but I wouldn’t mind a little political gambling. Where was Kemp on casinos?
I also want to point out, DTM, that it looks like you just referenced yourself in 3rd person. Don’t let ACP know!
The secret of not waiting for 10 minutes to “check out” is to find another gas station.
You have to be compassionate, though, if you understand that DTM is the liberal one amongst Sally’s multiple personalities :b
I think Noway had it at 60-40.
So take all his lottery numbers and add 10.
I actually had it 53-47. But stock picks are superb!
Nostradumass, perhaps.
Why so sour, Sigmoid? Join in our Trump – Kemp celebration! Take off your rubber gloves, put down that lube and party!
Hey old man, I didn’t have a dog in this fight.
It is like if you and Sally Forth had a duel or something.
Sally and I are buddies! The inly duel here is between you and your tube of KY!
Hey Lawton! I’m getting the general notifications, but not getting any of the responses to my “notify me” on posts, even tho I check both before Add Comment. That function used to work for me, but doesn’t now. Please reply to this and see if the site will notify me. I’m checking both boxes below.
Testing
Nope, nothing. Thanks anyway.
If this pace continues and barring a huge upset in November then 7.5% of Georgia’s voters will have made this incompetent tool a governor. Nonpartisan primaries with the top two going to the general is the way we need to go if we want the majority of voters electing our state leaders and actually going to the polls in greater numbers.
For all the grief Kemp took from some quarters for his ad campaign, it was brilliant. And it worked.
There really isn’t any way to know this. I guess you are conceeding that is was a race of the “craziest”. I don’t see how being surrounded by guns is “brilliant”. Cagle is a indeed a craven politician who basically got exposed as someone who was fairly dishonest as well. The ads were just beyond silly. Trump does have an 88% approval rating among Republicans but the turning point was that recording. That was when Kemp got traction.
It’s somewhat like football, once the momentum swings into your favor, it can easily be over if you don’t regroup.
I think Kemp is an incompetent buffoon but at least Cagle is done in GA politics.
We might not be able to make fun of Fob James anymore or look down on Alabama if Kemp makes it to the governor’s mansion.
What were Fob’s foibles? It’s been so long, I’m not remembering.
Two words: Roy Moore.
Argh! Nope, nothing coming through, not even in junk folder. Nobody else gets to accuse me of drive-by posting and not responding — I don’t even know when somebody responds now. :\
Well, I guess this proves everybody better git off his porch!
PRESIDENT TRUMP told us that we’d get tired of all of the winning. He lied. I’m not tired at all.
Next stop …. Governor Kemp!
WXIA/SurveyAmerica had Kemp +2 over Abrams in a survey done 7/15-7/19. I believe Abrams can overcome that 2% margin. Depends on how many Republicans turn out for Kemp. I bet the metro area of Atlanta has a decrease of Republicans turning out for Kemp.

I think the Trump endorsement hurts in the general bc Dems really hate him. Don’t know how much though. Maybe one way to handicap it is to say that DJT has 90% approval among Rs, but 98% disapproval among Ds, so carry the 8…
I agree that dems hate Trump. It’s borderline derangement. Don’t underestimate the disdain conservatives have for the liberal agenda, the arrogance, the liberal attitudes, the liberal actions, the liberal intolerance, rudeness, in your face name- calling and visible hatred. They don’t like the bias they see in Washington, the press, the intelligence agencies, the dishonesty and abuse of power. Its horribly unattractive and scary as a matter of fact. Conservatives will be fired and nothing is more horrible than visualizing radical leftists winning anything at all. Both sides will be energized.
It is a mistake to conflate conservatives and Trumpists. His fiscal policies are not those of a conservative. As time goes by this will even affect Georgia politics. Even those farmers who belly up to his new welfare trough can recognize that this is not conservative politics.
You forgot about the media.
Will, I beg to differ at with respect to national conservatives and fiscal policy. In action, it’s been tax cuts first and seeking to cut entitlements second. A balanced budget is mentioned only to propel cuts in entitlements (which do need some adjustments in my opinion).
Judging by how many came out tonight for Kemp on a Trump endorsement, you’ll see this enthusiasm and much more if Trump asks his voters to do likewise in November. Trump, my friends, is definitely on the ballot this Fall! MAGA!
So, wouldn’t it be MGGA (Georgia Great Again)?
But if GA is already #1…
But I assume Trump will do a stump here, and maybe raise some R turnout.
But Nov. is a long way away, and it may be that Sonny has to step in to save the fallout among the ag community.
Good point. Both Trump and Sonny, hell, the Republicans will be out the night before!
It will be “Hollywood of the South” vs. the “Northeastern Elitist”.
Wait for it…
The Dem Congressional races are interesting. Early Gwinnett votes now getting turned around by later Forsyth, and some late DeKalb.
Looks like a rough night for incumbents.
What’s Cagle’s background, relating to what he’ll do out of politics?
He has a banking background, ran a bank when he was in the State Senate, before elected Lt. Guv. So he’ll be able to make a living.
But whenever Johnny Isakson retires, I’d expect Cagle to run for that Senate seat. Maybe. I don’t think he’ll disappear from politics. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see him jump in and campaign for Kemp these next 3+ months, now that the blood-letting is past.
Not to be morbid, but Isakson has Parkinsons, so this will probably be his last term since he has 4 years left I think.
Yes, Isakson is in bad shape. If you’ve seen him he struggles to walk.
And now to November! The Dems have already started the campaign of lies – saw Theron Johnson on local TV this evening proclaiming that Stacey Abrams is “a Georgian, was born in Georgia.”
Gong! She was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Mississippi, came here in high school, attended Spellman, then off to Texas, then Connecticut, then back to Atlanta sometime before 2007 to build political career.
And this is just small potatoes. Wait for the millions of dollars pouring into GA from Dems and Socialists/Communists around the country trying to take over Georgia. Goodnight folks.
You missed Yale Law School, but I’m sure it was an oversight. Thats right Sally…all us Democratic Socialists are commin’ for your stuff.
YEA!!! The Edit is Back!!!
So you have a problem with other Americans donating to Abrams but no problem with Kemp doing nothing about the Russians hacking Georgia voter rolls? D’oh don’t answer that. Mother Russia is who you have allegiance to so I know the answer.
They aren’t real Americans.
So what if she was born in Wisconsin. Lots of us were born in Wisconsin (Go Badgers!). Lots of Georgia voters were born in places not named Georgia. Only 6 out of the 20 plus people in my office were born in Georgia.
And that’s a sad commentary. But my point was that Theron sat there and lied into the camera right off the bat. He needs to get his talking points straight.
Did you think Georgia just has this huge baby boom that increased the population? Georgia either created jobs or moved companies to avoid higher taxes/avoid the unions from other states to here and folks come with or for the jobs.
So Make Georgia Great Again would mean kicking out all the Yankees and carpetbaggers? What do you call the invaders from the American West?
Unbelievable. Un-American.
I wonder how many democrats came out and voted for Kemp. He is definitely the weaker of the two.
Dunno, depends on how many of them thought it important to weigh in on the Abrams v. Evans primary vote since that made them ineligible to vote R this go round. I suspect less than in most past years though anyone paying attention pretty much knew this years’ was still a foregone conclusion, perhaps not as much of one as most other recent ones.
It should also be noted somewhere that Trumpists Duncan and Raffensperger won last night as well.
Absurd. First, any poll taken before a party officially has a nominee is meaningless as it will significantly under poll the party with no nominee.
Kemp will clobber Abrams. Not gonna be close. But I highly urge you leftists to dig deep and max out for Stacey.
Gonna luv seeing Hollywood celebs and national media swoon for Stacey- and then be sent packing come November.
Although either one would have beaten Abrams, anyone thinking Kemp will be easier for her to beat than Cagle would have been is cray cray.
Point that metaphorical shotgun at the libs Brian!
You may be right, but I find it a little bit disturbing.
What is it about him that attracts you? Is it just the ‘R’? Or does the idea of him shooting people or rounding up immigrants appeal to you? Is there anything about actually being a governor that you like about him?
What attracts me to Kemp? Keeping it short, 2 things. 1st is what he is not. He is not a socialist which I absolutely consider his opponent to be.
2nd, as opposed to my perception of Cagle, imo Kemp actually is a committed conservative. Examples- despite the NRA endorsement imo Kemp is actually stronger on 2A. Also- if an actual strong RFRA comes to his desk, despite objections from Amazon or other Fortune 500 types, I expect that he will sign it. I just don’t believe Cagle would have signed it after being lobbied by big business.
You could be correct. But I feel certain Cagle was even more fake. And bottom line, I don’t care if they are fake as long as he upholds them. And I think he is far more likely to do just that than Cagle would have been.
This is what Ed Gillespie tried to do in VA. He ran as the candidate of confederate statues in 1/2 of the state and the son of immigrants in the other 1/2.
BS. Abrams is going to make further inroads in the Metro Atlanta, has a massive GOTV operation building to turn out 200,000 low propensity black voters in and around Macon, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, Valdosta, Albany, and Americus, and will be up in North Georgia with a message of expanding medicaid and investing in forgotten rural communities. Abrams will be fighting for every vote from Brunswick to Dalton talking about issues while Kemp rides around screeching about white identity politics and imaginary sanctuary cities.
Stacey will definitely win the Hollywood vote. For whatever that is worth.
Stop with the Hollywood BS. There are hundreds of thousands of hard working Georgians who cast a ballot for her in May and with hard work and determination we will have millions more leading her to victory in November.
Nope. Gonna hang Hollywood around her neck. Gonna hang daily kos around her neck, gonna hang Pelosi around her neck. Gonna hang Ocasio- Cortez around her neck.
You guys nominated her. You get the whole thing.
Fox News is the only entity obsessed with Ocassio-Cortez. Most all of the negative messaging will be around Pelosi and Northeastern, Ivy-league educated elitists like Trump.
Wait- what?
Bernie and Barack will come in and help out with the messaging and turnout. I don’t think many actors or other candidates will go on the stump.
Hollywood will sweep in just like they did for Ossoff. Results won’t be nearly as close.
Now we have posters bragging about what they are going to “hang” around a black woman’s neck? K.
Keep it up . We will see exactly how far that gets you. Frankly, I don’t give a damn what folks like you think of me.
Of course, it probably is all you have since you nominated a socialist.
So yea, we are gonna hang everything you guys asked for around your neck . You asked for it. You got it.
Don’t you dare do that! That’s not how he meant those words and you know it!! Good Lord, you guys “racialize” every God Damn thing!!! Please keep this type of verbiage going. Matter of fact, please post this crap everywhere you can. Not just for the GaPol community, but letters to the editors, anything else. People are so freaking tired of this…
Appreciate it Noway but let him keep it up. Doesn’t bother me even a little bit.
It’s all they have- and it ain’t gonna fly in Georgia.
We have real policy positions like expanding Medicaid and fully funding public education in non-election years. All you have is imaginary sanctuary cities and the fairy tale that a Governor Abrams will somehow be able to take away your guns.
Andrew: You and I have a long history on here. Huge, actually. Even after Trump’s unexpected win, I have consistantly said for your side to nominate someone in ’20 who better addresses the middle class/working man concerns that Trump undoubtedly captured in ’16. Seems like a reasonable path, at least to me. Simply nominate a better candidate. But you/your party seemingly doubles down on insult politics. Now, part of that may be to tweak me in our back and forth. I understnad that. But as a party strategy, it’s not smart. On a state or local level. Repeated racial insults/innuendo or saying Repub voters are stupid is not going to get more votes for your side. Recognize that Trump tapped an “ignored or forgotten” market, if you will. Your folks can go after them too, if you wanted. But your dogmatic stubbornness is preventing you from initiating an intelligent path that might lead your side to victory.
I tried.
Now, I’m going to enjoy seeing your candidate lose in November!
I think Stacey A. will have to take the word “socialism” back- own it, explain that it means better access to health care and hospitals, better public education, better job training and technical education, and higher education, etc.
Socialism, at its heart, is just caring about society and equality of opportunity. It’s not communism, which most assume it is. But to win, she will have to counter those labels and talk about how that means caring for rural communities, etc.
