Capitol Takes A Snow Day…Mostly

Update: The Governor has announced that most state offices will remain closed Thursday due to the amount of ice on the ground and the fact that temps won’t rise above freezing until sometime tomorrow.

This photo of the Capitol in the morning snow was sent to us by Rep Karen Mathiak (R-Griffin), with the photo credit apparently belonging to Rep Dominic Lariccia (R-Douglas).

Most of Georgia government offices were closed as the snowstorm has locked much of North and Central Georgia in with 1-2″ of snow and brutally cold temperatures.  The legislature was not scheduled to meet today, but joint House-Senate budget hearings were scheduled to take place as is custom the week of the MLK holiday.

Most of the hearings were cancelled for today, but not all of them.  The Governor’s Chief of Staff, Chris Riley, notes via the Twitter that OPB director Teresa MacCartney found her way to the Appropriations committee room, as did House Appropriations Chairman Terry England and Senate Appropriations Jack Hill.

GDOT continues to treat roads, but the land mass covered in snow will soon be a land mass covered in ice, despite their best efforts. One fatality has already been reported on I-75 near Macon due to the storm, with countless other wrecks and closures of even major thoroughfares throughout the state.

In short, if you can, stay where you are. The sun will rescue everyone within 24-48 hours. Be cool and stay warm inside until normal programming can resume.
