On this date in 1886, John B. Gordon was sworn in as Governor of Georgia. Having served in the Civil War, Gordon was rumored to be a member of the KKK and was the First Commander of the United Confederate Veterans, but that didn’t stop him from ascending to the role of U.S. Senator.

Being rumoured to be a member of the Klan was an asset to most of Georgia’s voters for at least 75 more years, not that I take pride in that. Even with modern sensibilities on race however being the first commander of the Confederate veterans should not be considered ignoble. While their ultimate cause was far from noble, many who gave their lives were. Like most wars it came about due to the failures of politicians to resolve conflicts between oligarchs, though of course that is a vast oversimplification. The vast majority of Confederate grunts who did most of the dying did not own slaves or were not members of a household that owned slaves. There were many reasons they fought, some for their “country”, some were conscripted, some joined up with the local Colonel (typically a slave owner) for money, or to defend their community. Like most wars many gave their lives for their fellow grunts.
In the North there were also very few grunts who came from the monied class. You could legally pay someone else like a poor Irishman if you were drafted. This comes from a descendant of both Confederate and Union soldiers that were mostly southerners. My wife is a direct descendant of John A. Logan who was the 3rd commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (the counter group to the United Confederate Veterans) and the leader of the campaign that resulted in a national holiday for Memorial Day while at its helm. This was in response to the Confederates already having one.

Tuesday’s results will be overanalyzed and made more of than are warranted, but moves to the exits preceded Tuesday—There were rumors of LoBiondo retiring last weekend, and he made his announcement hours before VA polls closed.

Can a corporation under the GOP plan still deduct outsourcing expenses for relocating a U.S. business outside the United States? Well, sure. Corporations are people too, but some people are more equal than others..
I have always half-expected DJT to pass a tax bill that enriches him and his family significantly, then call it Mission Accomplished and go on cruise control. The cost-benefit on the time and effort to campaign and be Pres. is clear.

What I find annoying about all the GOP charts and conservative leaning reports all 3 of my elected congressional reps send me is that not one has a single childless example for someone making over $45,000. Not. One. It has no examples of what would be lost or gained if said single person had used a standard or itemized deductibles in the past. I have more then 15% health care costs, mortgage interest, SALT, work related expenses, and other things that far exceed what I would gain in a double standardized deduct- my personal exemption.
And when does this tax reform take place? On our 2017 taxes or the 2018? This will effect how I give to charities at the end of the year if I am going to have to ay more taxes by April and what medical expenses I need to accelerate, postpone, or in at least one case, forget about even doing until I can afford it or it become a necessity.
The whole standard v. itemized deduction should just be done away with. We should at least continue to incentivize charitable giving, esp. when it’s the nonprofit sector that has, and will need to continue to, step up in the wake of social service budget cuts.
