University of North Georgia named ROTC Cyber Institute

The National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security have named the University of North Georgia and four other Senior Military Colleges National Centers of Academic Excellence for Cyber Defense. These schools focus on training leaders who specialize in protecting Americans within the increasingly complex cyber domain. 9th District Congressman Doug Collins and 8th District Congressman Austin Scott led a bipartisan group of lawmakers in asking Congressional leaders to set up ROTC Cyber Institutes at the UNG and the other SMCs.

The University was already scheduled as the site of the second annual security symposium, “Civil-Military Cooperation and International Collaboration in Cyber Operations” held Nov. 8-9 at the Library Technology Center on the Dahlonega Campus. The symposium, presented by UNG’s Institute for Leadership and Strategic Studies (ILSS) the Center for Cyber Operations Education, the College of Arts and Letters and the UNG Press will feature several guest speakers, panel discussions, and poster sessions.

Congressman Collins in leading the bipartisan group said,

I believe that the University of North Georgia and other outstanding military colleges are well-positioned to help defend our nation from cyber threats, and that’s why I’ve asked my colleagues to further develop America’s defense skills by investing in these institutions.
