The Georgia National Guard Goes to Texas

Last night, Governor Nathan Deal announced that he was sending a crew from the Georgia National Guard to Texas in order to help with the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

WTOC reports that the 15-member crew is from the 165th Airlift Wing, and they are already in route to the affected area. They will be using a C-130H Cargo aircraft for rescue missions.

Georgia National Guard Airlift Crew Heading to Texas

The Pentagon estimates 30,000 National Guard troops will be deployed for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Georgia National Guard crew will join 30 airlift crews already in action. Another 23 have been requested. This, of course, could escalate once Harvey’s damage to neighboring Louisiana comes into focus. Already last night, that state was also dealing with catastrophic flooding. The Washington Post compiled a list of other military units involved in relief efforts. Besides Texas and now Georgia, the other states that have provided National Guard units to assist include Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, and Utah.

In his same post announcing the deployment, Governor Deal asked Georgians to donate to VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) members. This echoes a call from FEMA Administrator Brock Long.
