Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens Not Running For Re-Election

The AJC’s James Salzer is reporting that long running rumors are true. Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens won’t be seeking re-election.

State Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, a two-term incumbent and former state lawmaker, has decided against running for another term in 2018.

Hudgens served in the state House and Senate from the Athens area, rising to chairman of Senate Insurance Committee, before running in 2010 to replace longtime commissioner John Oxendine, who ran unsuccessfully for governor.

Hudgens told the crowd at the recent Walton GOP BBQ that he had not decided on whether or not to run. Given that Roy Roberts’ annual event is often used as a kickoff to statewide campaigns, that was a telling sign. Now the GOP must find a replacement nominee (and interested Democrats will see another opportunity without an incumbent).

Consider this your reminder that it’s still mid-2017, and your 2018 field of candidates is still being set.
