Rep. Karen Handel Sworn In

At approximately 7:00 p.m. this evening, Congresslady Karen Handel was sworn in as the first Republican female member of the U.S. House from Georgia. Rep. John Lewis (D, GA-5) rose to ask for Representative-elect Handel to be accepted into the House despite the Certificate of Election not being sent to the House. After the same was done for Representative-elect Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Speaker Paul Ryan swore in both Rep. Handel and Rep. Norman.

Rep. Lewis was then recognized to introduce Rep. Handel to the House. Further introductions we made after Rep. Lewis yielded the floor to Rep. Tom Graves (R, GA-14). Rep. Handel shared very brief remarks, during which she stated:

“This is an extraordinary honor and the greatest privilege that I think I have ever had and I look forward to serving the people of the 6th District, to serving the people of Georgia, and to being a good co-worker and friend to each and every one of you.”
