Morning Reads – Thursday, June 8, 2017
On this date in 1967, Israeli airplanes attacked the USS Liberty in the Mediterranean during the 6-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors. 34 U.S. Navy crewmen were killed. Israel later called the incident a tragic mistake due to the mis-identification of the ship. The U.S. has never publicly investigated the incident.

Body-slamming Montana Congressman apologizes, buys his way out.
“My physical response to your legitimate question was unprofessional, unacceptable, and unlawful” seems to be an admission of criminal guilt. The $500 max criminal fine is only a hundredth of the $50,000 charitable contribution that made a potential civil case go away.
It’s A-OK with Handel so long as the campaign contributions keep coming, or maybe if they don’t, since the body-slammed reporter was an “enemy of the American people” peddling fake news.
So there’s a GoFundMe set up for the NSA leaker’s defense/family. Pretty sure that’s against their stated policies:
“Without limiting the foregoing, you agree to not use the Services to:
A. establish or contribute to any Campaign with the implicit or express purpose relating to any of the following:
…
…
the defense or support of anyone alleged to be involved in criminal activity;
…”
If that isn’t a persons of interest A list for Homeland Security…….
The Brits vote today for a new government. They don’t campaign for two years and they use paper ballots, two big points in their favor.
Europe hopes May wins a bigger Tory cushion to get the process of Brexit fully underway, Labor limps along, the Trumpish UKIP is dead or assimilated, and the Scots Nats remain popular.
OOOPs…looks like a hung Parliament…Tories will lose their majority and May will lose her job.
I’ll wait for the votes to be counted. Paper ballots, yo.
Its official. Tories lose majority, yo.
Yep. Right now it’s chaos. Lots of questions to be answered. Can May hang on? Will Corbyn really become PM? Will there be anyone left to handle Brexit talks which come up in 10 days?
Also of note will the tories alliance with Northern Ireland Party to get a majority throw the peace there off the rails. The UK can no longer be a neutral arbiter
Comey’s testimoney revealed. Good grief!! I wonder what fake news Washington wants on its Nothing Burger today!?
I know you’re not worried since Ryan’s new rule, taking a cue from Mitch as concerns SCOTUS, is no impeachment of incompetent newby Presidents that don’t know any better, which given Trumps mental prowess, means he safe for the duration.
If that was for me, I’m not worried because there’s been no impeachable offense.
The demos were throwing bs for the worse for Trump but as questions shift to the Obama administration and Comey’s leaks, they might get a boomerang…..
Comey, do you want to keep your FBI director job? I need loyalty. I expect loyalty.
Chalk up another GOP/Trump accomplishment, the President running the government like the CEO of a business.
For those that need more proof, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy.” just like business executives do for their “good guy” cronies.
Running the government like a business is a Karen Handel principle.
“Perhaps the defrocked FBI director has a bombshell still to drop. But far from documenting an abuse of power by President Trump, his prepared statement reveals Mr. Comey’s misunderstanding of law enforcement in a democracy.”
You will excuse me if I tend to believe that Mr. Comey perhaps has a better understanding of US law enforcement than an opinion piece written by WSJ editors. He is only a former US Attorney, Deputy Attorney General, and of course FBI Director.
He is also a former Acting Attorney General who offered his resignation in lieu of signing a get-out-of-jail-free approval for the NSA to continue breaking the law during the Bush/Cheney years. Yes, like any Washington insider he is also a political animal but I have more incredulity for the guy who called him a “nut job” to Russia’s diplomats after firing him because he didn’t get his ring kissed.
IMO:
We should all hope that Musk can deliver but without billions in taxpayer supports or legislated advantages.
The government should engage in research but doesn’t need to be a venture capital source.
Trump knows a team cannot accomplish much without loyalty (not yes men) and should dismiss those that won’t and those that cross ethical or criminal boundaries.
For $40 million District 6 is going to get a Republican deeply indebted to the old guard or a Democrat walking in goosestep with the progressives and the resistance.
The cancer of Ossoff metro progressives is the worst case.
Sans Trump, it’s a safe seat for the GOP even if open.
Handel as incumbent can take a cue from Trump and walk away from any debt, except that she is the old guard.
Paraphrasing:
King: “When the president says ‘I hope’ or ‘I suggest,’ is that an order?”
Comey: “Yes.”
Also, 8CA has upheld “I hope” as being indicative of intent to obstruct justice in a criminal case; see: https://twitter.com/adamliptak/status/872835418194157568
Hopeful: Then you would agree a real threat worth detaining is someone calling out, identifying with or using social media to encourage violence, rioting, beheading, killing, looting, robbing and harming persons or property.
Worth investigating to see if there is a ‘real threat’ and a ‘real capability’ to carry out a threat of violence, sure. ‘Real threats’ are not protected speech.
Just like the Sandy Hook hoaxer who just got sent to 5mo prison for making threatening phone calls.
