Senator Isakson Comes Out Against Campus Carry
Senator Johnny Isakson did two Telephone Town Halls last week and was impressive in both. He took on all questions, showed his depth of knowledge and commitment to Georgians in all his responses. It is worth your time taking a couple hours to listen to the both in their entirety, even if you disagree with some of his positions.
Especially notable was his statement on the campus carry bill making its way through the legislature at current. He was asked about a US Senate bill regarding reciprocity of concealed carry permits, which he supports, but he added, and reiterated later, how opposed he was to Campus Carry:
You’ll note that he addresses proposals in the state legislature that would put guns in schools. Though he doesn’t say “Campus Carry” that’s the only real possibility.
His opposition to guns on campus is in line with that of Governor Nathan Deal, who vetoed the bill last year, and the people of Georgia, who in poll after poll, decline to support the initiative.

Who thought a dozen years ago that Congressman Deal would be checking the GaGOP from the left?
It doesn’t really surprise me all that much? Remember, he was a Dem State Senator/Rep (even founded the Blue Dog caucus!) that switched parties to protect his seat but stayed a career backbencher. (It’s really something: You look him up in news archives on Lexis and it’s amazing how he goes from being all over the press on welfare reform as a Dem to pretty much disappearing the moment he switches parties. He’s barely anything until he runs for Governor.)
He was never an anti-government fire breather or an Onward, Chistian Right Soldier anyway, and now he’s in the last job he’ll ever have. He’s always also been someone who’s small bore sleazy with his ethics and looking for a way to make a quick buck, from the salvage yard shenanigans to reimbursing himself big time with campaign bucks and (illegally) with taxpayer dollars. He’s gonna want to be able to get a nice Former Governor’s Sinecure with either a big time Atlanta law firm or a big time Atlanta corporate board to help make him money. The way you do that is to not, like Pat McCrory did over in NC, make yourself the public face of far right craziness that hurts the business folk’s bottom line (see him whining in the press yesterday about being the real victim of HB-2 because it hurts him, a guy who worked for the NC equivalent of GA Power all during his mayoralty, going through the revolving door).
Good for him.
What is the argument that says campus carry is OK but US Capitol carry is not?
Or…why is the Georgia Gold Dome a gun free zone? Guns everywhere except where politicians are doing the public’s business.
