Morning Reads – Thursday, March 2, 2017
A familiar story: On this date in 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the winner of the 1876 presidential election by Congress. Samuel J. Tilden, however, had won the popular vote on November 7, 1876.

Next Saturday, March 11, will include not one but TWO great events (both in #GA06, fwiw) to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the fight against childhood cancers!
Meehan’s in Sandy Springs will host a head-shaving event from noon-4:00pm where long-time friend of PP/GeorgiaPol Rich “Sully” Sullivan will be not only helping to run the show but also getting HIS head shaved for the 9th time to help close the huge research funding gap for childhood cancers!
Then, from 3:00p-6:00p, The Harp Irish Pub in Roswell will be hosting their annual St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event, where Yours Truly will be going under the clippers for the 10th time with my Team Spider Monkey co-conspirators! I’m looking to raise $5K this year, and if TSM can reach our team goal of a bit over $21K, we will hit a total raised (going back to ’08) of $200,000 for the research to not only cure childhood cancers but to also improve the quality of life for the survivors!
Hit up one of these great events! And even if you can’t make it by to have some fun (and a libation or 3), PLEASE PLEASE click on Rich’s or my page and make a small (or not-so-small) donation to boost our efforts! THANKS!!♣

I wonder if the vegan will get anywhere near the 15-20 years that Joe Torres and Kayla Norton got …
you seriously comparing the (very stupid and dangerous) actions of a drunk to the willful and intentional racial terrorizing of children with guns?
Of course. Points of comparison:
1) motivated by ideology (racism the former, veganism the latter)
2) deadly weapons involved (guns the former, automobile the latter, and our experience from any number of police shootings of fleeing drivers shows, automobiles are legally considered deadly weapons)
Points of diversion:
1) the former case was a threat of violence, the latter case involved an actual violent act (hitting the chicken truck with the car TWICE meaning that at the very least the second strike was premeditated)
2) the former the convicted was sober, the latter the accused was sober.
I would say that the last fact is the only one that justifies a lighter sentence. The rest – especially the part about “threatened violence versus actual violence committed” should merit a sentence that is comparable at least and quite likely more severe.
Well, the law works in much more specific ways than the conceptual free-form above. E.g., one major point of “diversion” is the involvement of a child, so all sorts of child endangerment issue and laws arise as potentially actionable. Another is the fact that race invokes special protections, and even when there aren’t hate crime laws on the books, special concerns. A prosecutor and judge, then, may not be so concerned with setting an example with a vegan as a racist. Etc.
The Washington Post reports Attorney General Sessions spoke twice with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. when Sessions was a Trump campaign ally during the 2016 race.
”I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”—Nominee Sessions testifying under oath to Congress during the confirmation process.
Five weeks in, and already Trump has picked at least a two that have lied about communications with the Russians. Who could have known?
Flynn lied to Pence and made him look like an idiot. He was tossed out on his ear.
Sessions lied under oath to the SenJudComm and committed perjury. The JudComm has historically allowed nominees to “correct the record” during their continued testimony, but not 3 weeks after their confirmation. So what happens now?
Nothing. Sessions goes to work. You Libs go into therapy…
I’m already in therapy, thank you very much. You demean mental illness and do not contribute to the debate.
Noway, I’ve answered your serious questions before, and I do not demean you or your position, though I think it’s untenable. I do not think you are contributing positively to this discussion. I would ask that you engage in some introspection as to whether your goal is to discuss, or merely to hurt.
Thank you.
Your question was what happens now? Well, Sessions ain’t going nowhere. He certainly won’t resign. He’s done nothing wrong. Should he recuse himself for talking to the Russian ambassador in his capacity as a US senator? I don’t think it is necessary. Senators talk to foreign representatives all the time. I think the Dems and the press are desperate to remain relevent and will sit and pick and pick and pick at anything. The DNI Clapper said in December that there ain’t nuthin’ to the Russia crap. Enough already. You folks lost. Regroup, get a new standard bearer and come out strong in ’20. Make your case. Reconnect with the voters. That’s how you get out of the funk of losing. If you do that, you have a good chance to win next time.
>Senators talk to foreign representatives all the time.
But The Post’s Adam Entous contacted all 26 members of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 2016 to see whether any lawmakers besides Sessions met with Kislyak in 2016. Of the 20 lawmakers who responded, every senator, including Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.), said they did not meet with the Russian ambassador last year. The other lawmakers on the panel did not respond as of last night.
>He’s done nothing wrong.
He, at best, intentionally misled the Senate Judiciary Committee, and did not correct the record. To me, that qualifies as a “wrong.”
I make no effort to re-litigate the 2016 election. Your guy won because he connected better to the voters. Now, please stop pretending there’s nothing wrong with the behavior of those at the top.
You are correct in your last sentence. But the ongoing Dem narrative is that the Russians hacked the election and by implication, caused Hillary to lose. The Russians did not hack voting machines. They did not change votes. Now, someone did leak Podesta’s truthful emails that contained info that Podesta and the Dems wish never had been made public. Truthful emails. The substance of which has never been challenged. Did it look bad? Yep. But yall ran a bad candidate and she lost. I will tell you this: I think Bernie would have beaten Donald. I think Biden would have, too. Circumstances and events lead to Hillary being the Dem nominee. She didn’t even campaign in normal Dem states. Hindsight is always 20/20. What I can say is that a private citizen becoming Prez is an aberration that will never happen again. But it did legitimately happen this time. David, seriously, I post stuff to be snarky? Sure. It’s all in fun and a little to get responses from Drew. you, to an extent and CC. it’s never with hurtful intentions. Yall bust my backside and I do likewise. Anyway, it’s all good. I’m hopeful that your sessions are helpful and you ar working through whatever issues the therapy is addressing!!
You and I will always be on differnet sides of this. Let’s just wait and see what happens. My bet is that nothing of a collusion nature will be discovered.
The only people calling the Russian hacking a Dem narrative are Trump, people working for Trump or the media outlets that hate the Dems. No one is saying voting machines were rigged and so on… Hillary lost because Hillary didn’t carry the electoral college. Just Like McGovern lost in 1972 by not carrying the electoral college. Yet Watergate still happened. People lied under oath to cover it up and even though it would not alter the election, we still investigated it. (and no I am not saying we are at a Watergate level).
If the Russian’s talking to the Trump campaign is not important why are people lying UNDER oath about it? McCaththy and Chaffetz are calling for Sessions to recuse himself from all Russian investigations.
And, and, and, and Drew, you kinda forget to mention, for the umpteenth time, that she got more votes than Trump. Don’t make me have to present both sides of our continuing fights!
There’s nothing to it since Clapper, a guy that lied under oath to Congress just as Sessions did, says so?
Trump’s son past statement that the family’s fortune was unbalanced toward Russia and Trump lying that he would release his tax return to prove that’s no longer true, Trump campaign officials with Russians ties, Russian interference in the election, Trump’s National Security Advisor appointee incompetent or lying about communications with Russians, is followed by the head of Justice Department lying about his communications with the Russians.
We can rest assured the GOP Congress will get right on it, after repealing and replacing Obamacare that Trump promised would be done immediately, perhaps even on day one, and the multiple other investigations ahead in the queue.
It’s not like Sessions sat on a plane with Trumps wife for 20 minutes discussing his grandchild and golf. He only talked to a possible Russian agents (AKA diplomats of a hostile government) which may or may not be related to his senate job. I mean, under the Trumpters thinking (or yelling into campaign microphones daily) it’s no where near the level of Lynch (or Sessions) possibly colluding with a presidential nominee, maybe being promised to keep her as AG (cause Session never really wanted to be AG…), some how trying to sway the FBI as their technical boss (even though she had reclused herself unlike some other AG we know) in the email investigation (about whether a private unsecure server of the Clintons ‘might’ of endangered national security – not that someone actually talked to people who can endanger national security.)
It’s completely different. Trump told us so (from his personal twitter account sent from his non secured android). As did the AG spokes woman last night in a press release (sent from a private unsecured Gmail address). And contradicted by the AG himself in his own statements this morning (twice). No reason to over react with talk like Lynch (I mean Sessions) resigning or chanting about locking her (I mean him), up…
Just like Noway said… Nothing
question: Do you take no issue with the fact that Sessions lied under oath?
I take issue with anyone lying under oath. I just didn’t have a parallel for my sarcastic narrative between Lynch and Sessions and being under oath. If you got one for me, I’ll add a chapter two.
(I’m reserving the meaning of ‘is’ for a later and more worthy issue.)
UPDATE Lea, I just noticed you were not a reply to me. I saw you name it below my comment and thought it was… Need. More. Coffee.
sorry. my comment was meant as a reply to Noway not you. oops. too late to fix
I hope Sessions hasn’t moved his sheets and hoods to DC yet…
He must resign. Today is good. He lied under oath to Congress. His word is forever doubted. No investigation under his leadership will be free from partisan taint.
This isn’t even a political issue any longer and shouldn’t be framed as if it were.
Noway,
question: Do you take any issue with the fact that Sessions lied under oath?
Nope. Using the Hillary defense, ‘he didn’t recall” and besides, there was “no intent” to break the law. This is a non-story.
Never. She is a gen-u-ine liar and a crook. And if I have to, I’ll resurrect the The Pumkin and say that she will be indicted with in 6 months! How’s that?
If I have to, I will get out the food processor – pumpkin soy lattes… (vegan of course). I have a nice Columbian spiced sugar I can sprinkle over it.
Russkies to the left of me. Russkies to the right. Russkies under the bed. Russkies in the kitchen, in the pantry, in the bath tub. Russkies everywhere!
How come every single damn one of Trump’s cabinet, advisers, campaign managers have ties to Russia?
It is past time to get worried.
I’m calling on Sen. McCaskill to resign her senate seat immediately. She’s a blatant liar!

Twitter lies are okay. The President lies on Twitter, so it’s got to be okay right?
Give me a lie under oath and I’ll work with you.
Russkie opinion:
I don’t think either party is dumb on what Russia is up to, discredit the U.S.
I think folks in both parties try to figure it out by feeling out Russian contacts or observers.
I think Hillary works everything for personal gain (example, uranium deal).
I think Russia believed, like everyone else did, that Hillary had the election in the bag.
I think Russian hacking was out to undermine her anticipated Presidency.
The media wants it to be Russia helping Trump. Unlikely.
Russia must be enjoying this deflection.
