It seemed impossible but these MRs are better than the totality of every other MRs posted anywhere at anytime.

- Good thing Global Warming is still a theory.
- The State of Georgia is preparing to kill another citizen.
- Despite one candidate playing the paranoid loons s/he is so artfully stirring as part of his/her POTUS campaign by inciting supporters to paranoia, Georgia’s election systems aren’t and can’t be rigged.
- But that’s what they’d want you to believe.
- Some 150K Georgians have already
pulled the levertouched the screen in this year’s election. - Could Atlanta’s new parking enforcement company make us yearn for the halcyon days of Park Atlanta?
- What it was like covering the Braves for The Duluth Neighbor (a fake newspaper–just read the report).
- Delta’s new uniforms are fly. Get it? Like a plane? But also cool?
*This is a debatable statement for me IRL.

“kill another citizen” is one way to say it. But “The state will execute a man who ambushed two police officers, killing one and seriously wounding the other,” would be more accurate.

Both are true–how about that! If a government can kill its own citizens you have no liberty–also true. The state is not morally justified to kill a man just as no man is morally justified to kill another–still true! Let’s keep going!
The Death Penalty is not a deterrent and absurdly expensive–true but conservatives don’t care!
The Death Penalty by any stretch meets the standard of cruel and unusual punishment–no need to bother debating the veracity of that statement!
States get Death Penalty cases wrong frequently (and let’s be honest, any non-zero number is far too high) so they shouldn’t have that in their toolkit of justice–true true true!

In some cases a man is justified in killing another. Murder is when an individual unlawfully kills someone.
The death penalty is a permanent deterrent to the murderer. The executed individual will never kill or harm again.
The death penalty is not cruel and unusual. The death penalty has been used in this country for many years.
The death penalty should be used only in cases where there is very strong proof of guilt. I don’t know of any recent Georgia cases where an innocent person was executed.
This case is particularly gruesome. Officer Sowa was shot several times. Pat Cocciolone was shot twice then shot four more times while she was on the ground. She will never fully recover.
Lawler won’t get much sympathy from the usual anti death penalty crowd. He is not “mentally ill” nor is he female or a minority.

i wonder- would it be considered a death penalty if someone died in jail, just form natural causes, while serving out a sentence? a penalty for sure, just no retributive end. in the end, the death penalty is far more abt retribution than deterrence. just fodder.

yeah, and i don’t even like imagining what a victim must feel or want to do in order to feel that there is justice. which is why i feel that a jury should only determine eligibility for the death penalty, but the surviving victim(s) should decide whether or not to enforce it.
Lawler was sentenced to death by a jury. At the clemency hearing Pat Cocciolone and several members of Officer Sowa’s family testified for the state in favor of execution.

Well if you ask me, yes. I realize I am very much in the minority on this and I’m certainly an extremist but I am starting to believe there is no difference between life in jail and the death penalty.
I know. Keeping someone in prison indefinitely seems pretty cruel too.
But I always come back to this: How can we encourage people to not kill each other when we kill people officially? If we institutionalize death as a suitable retribution, how do you tell people it’s not acceptable?
You are not an extremist. In areas where the death penalty is “off the table” progressives immediately begin working to declare life imprisonment to be cruel and unusual also. That is why in much of Europe, life sentences are not allowed. This is why Anders Breivik only received 21 years for killing 77 – most of them young people – and being defiantly unrepentent.
I know that I am going to sound – or should I say “read” – like an unsophisticated rube, but this is due to the progressive ideology that criminals largely lack free will … that they are either mentally ill or are the product of their environment. In the latter case, if the “environment” is a capitalist, patriarchal, religious or otherwise traditional or conservative economy and society, the culture itself to blame and we – or at least everyone who has not consciously rejected the cultural mainstream and is not working to overturn it – are all collectively guilty. So people steal and deal drugs because of economic want caused by a failure to transfer the means of production and redistribute excess wealth to the people, violence is due to
“acting out” frustrations at being economically and politically marginalized, rape is caused by a culture that degrades, objectifies and dehumanizes women while privileging men, etc.
So if a person’s crimes are due to untreated mental illness, political or economic marginalization, or a lifetime of conditioning in a culture or system that is itself corrupt and based on oppression and exploitation, then no one is truly “guilty” in a meaningful sense. So, notions of law enforcement and criminal justice are considered to be not only wrongheaded, but a powerful tool of the oppressor class to maintain the status quo over the unprivileged, and should be replaced by rehabilitation aimed at removing the effects of the retrograde culture from the individual. To put it another way, according to this mindset when a crime occurs, both the perpetrator and the target are victims of the societal conditions that molded the perpetrator in the first place.
So you are not an extremist at all, but rather 10-15 years behind the curve in America, and where much of Europe has already arrived. Or in other words, you are no more an extremist than advocates of gay marriage were back when Bill and Hillary Clinton supported – and the former campaigned on and signed – the Defense of Marriage Act.

Average number of October days of 80° or above in Atlanta is 5. I believe today will bring us to either 12 or 13 days above that mark for October 2016.
I’m very surprised Cobb and Gwinnett have so few advance voting sites open. Gwinnett only has one and Cobb has 2. While I know more are opening up Halloween week, it’s crazy people are standing in line so long to vote now. Fulton already has 24 sites open and my wait yesterday morning was zero minutes. Dekalb also has several sites open. It shows in the voting numbers in the linked article, 15k in Fulton and 12k in dekalb have voted while Cobb is 3600 and Gwinnett 1500.

yes and no, I would think that if you were the 2 counties with the largest pool of Republican voters by raw numbers and saw that the 2 counties with the largest pool of Democratic voters are making it much easier for democrats to vote you would want to level the playing field. I also see that Clayton, with the 3rd biggest chunk of democratic voters, already has 4 advance voting sites open in a county that is far more compact than Cobb or Gwinnett. It looks like more people voted in Clayton County on Monday than voted in Gwinnett and Gwinnett has 3-4 times the population.
Yes. But stats show that those who are more likely to take advantage of early voting opportunities are of the Democratic persuasion. Regardless of what the county make up is. This is by design. For 2012, Cobb had more than 2 open at this same time (pretty certain but leaving room that my memory could be wrong on this). Why did they decrease the availability?…
Well hopefully the electronic voting machine system is better now, but we just don’t know. Back in the early days- 2000-2004- there was all kinds of documented hanky-panky involving unauthorized patches to the software, the head of Diebold Elections Systems being a Bush Pioneer fundraiser, Al Gore getting negative votes in Florida, etc. etc. (Fortunately Volusia County had paper backups and were able to correct the negative error, but we don’t have paper backups here, 16 years later.)

I guess the latest issue is that supposedly there is the capability of fractional votes in the source code of some voting machines. Why would this be?

Yes. This technology is proven, it works in many jurisdictions, and maintains the integrity of the voter record.
Another 575 persons voted yesterday in Oconee. That’s more than four percent of RVs voting in two days.
