Morning Reads for Friday, July 15, 2016
Ginny is out watching people play Pokemon-GO on the Tech campus today, so I’m filling in for your Morning Reads.
Today in History: Nixon visits Communist China
Here:
- The lack of rain in north Georgia has caused the US Department of Agriculture to declare counties as natural disaster areas. Farmers and ranchers in those counties may qualify for federal assistance.
- Savannah sees its first big ship to pass through the expanded Panama Canal.
- The former mayor of Tennille has been arrested and charged with theft.
There:
- The Republican National Convention kicks-off on Monday, but RNC committees have been meeting all this week. The Platform Committee has been cobbling together a platform that would make Pat Robertson proud.
- ICYMI: The Juno space probe has sent back its first picture since entering the Jovian system.
- Bernie has a book deal. “You Kids Stay Off My Lawn” probably won’t be the working title.
Yonder:
- “Coding” is probably the most widely-discussed form of work IT/Technology, but IT is more than just programming.
- This has to be in line with Lewis Grizzard’s “Don’t bend over in the garden, Granny, you know them taters got eyes.”
- Nintendo goes retro.

Pat Robertson is so 1988. Kris Kobach is the face of this platform and party.
Seeing what happened in Nice, did Obama come out late last night and propose a ban on 18 wheelers? Because they’re the real problem.
People already have special licenses to drive them, all of them have to have plates/tags by the state so we know how many are out there, people need to carry insurance an them and if they harm someone with one you can sue the driver, the owner and the manufacture, they have specialized paint for law enforcement to trace them in hit a runs, they already ban ones that are to long, to old, not to code or to heavy already, plus they have federally mandated safety features and such… so I’m going to guess Pres. Obama is most likely fine with them. (sarc)
🙂
This is why demand is down, while personal and government debt is way up. Low GDP growth combined with high debt is disaster waiting to happen. We really need to rethink the neoliberal globalization policy that creates a race to the bottom with wages.
……….A new report from the McKinsey Global Institute, with the chilling title “Poorer than their Parents: Flat or Falling Incomes in Advanced Economies,” shows just why this is the case. According to the paper, the trend in stagnating or declining incomes for middle class workers is not just confined to the United States, but is a global phenomenon hurting workers across the wealthy world.
The report found that as much as 70% of the households in 25 advanced economies saw their earnings drop in the past decade. The study tracked income brackets, not individual households, from 2005 to 2014. That compares to just 2% of households that saw declining incomes in the previous 12 years……..

So everything is going according to plan?
Anonymous GOP donor pledges $5 million if Trump releases tax returns: http://www.politico.com/story/2016/07/donald-trump-tax-returns-225446#ixzz4EJGBsbWj
Cap’n Tinyhands is more concerned about people knowing the size of his wallet, tax bill and charitable contributions than the size of anything else. Birthers swoon over Trump, while the GOP establishment adds yet another “lower the bar” accomplishment to the GOP resume.
Could we get a democrat donor to pledge 5 mil if Hilly releases her Wall St speeches? Even Burnie only released a partial tax return for one year. They all got stuff they don’t want to release.
It’s likely Trump legally pays a relatively small percentage of his income to the IRS just as is the case for many others in that bracket. It is also very likely that HRC pandered to those who paid her millions for gracing them with her presence at some fancy big financial gathering. So what! Will proof of either cause any voter to alter their voting preference? Nice soundbite, no substance as usual.
Maybe Trump will do what he said, and release his tax returns.
Soundbite? So what? We usually disagree, but it’s a disappointment to me you’ve succumbed to a partisan waiving of the long standing practice of releasing tax returns with a false equivalence argument.
The GOP is very largely embracing Trump, when nearly everything about his candidacy has been a lowering of the bar.
I had a Jaws and a Friday the 13th game for that system. Fun as heck at the time but nothing and I mean nothing beats the original PC Doom games. I tried to install the original Doom on my current PC but it wouldn’t take. Got the cheat codes back in the day and just wreaked havoc! With all the crap going on in the world in the last 24 hours, a Doom break would do me good.
The original multi-player version had the ability to flood a 10Mb ethernet network as id Software had some brilliant programmers though initially lacking in networking. Every packet was a broadcast from firewall to firewall. I disavow any knowledge of how I discovered this feature 😉 The open source code made it easy to create your own levels and change the graphics of the monsters too. My fav was one that changed all the demons to Barney and Disney characters. Hitting Barney with the rocket launcher was especially choice. Doom is still ingrained enough on my psyche that the big friendly giant is not what I’m thinking when hearing the current Spielberg The BFG title.
All this time I thought Chris Christie was the likely VP nom, but now I find out that as a prosecutor he put Ivanka’s father in law in jail! How is he even on the short list?
Yeah so I thought Christie’s quick endorsement was a play to get the nomination, when now it looks like he’s probably just trying to keep from having a potential President Trump destroy him.
Christie looked so subservient in that press conference that I figure he is in line to be named Trump’s head butler as opposed to VP or a cabinet level appointment.
Saw most of Obama’s town hall last night. Questions were most all friendly. Obama answered each question with a speech. Gun control, racial profiling, a guy wearing a cowboy hat promoted a u tube video……nothing new here. It was a waste.
Another unnecessary escalation by the men in blue.
Savannah cops misidentify a suspect, deploy tasers on innocent man. Then circle the wagons and arrest for obstruction.
Georgia has no statute that requires ID on demand, except in cases of loitering and prowling. The officers would not tell the man what he was suspected of when asked. The man gave his correct name to the officers when asked. After being tased and cuffed, the officers went through his wallet and realized they had the wrong guy. But still arrested him and charged him with obstruction.

And I am seeing people on Facebook actually justifying the PD and claiming they did everything right. It’s amazing.
Boot-licking is nothing new.
On these issues and many more it appears Facebook is fraught with conclusion jumpers of all stripes. For almost every service like the Philando Castile aftermath you have a disservice like the suicide turned into a “lynching”. The Klan isn’t bold enough to hold a lynching in Piedmont Park nor smart enough to leave no trace in such a populated area.
It makes for a two-front battle—addressing systemic defects, and time and energy wasted on ignorance.
The GOP’s infomercial hopes to sell a loveable Trump.
I’m not sure if there is any truth to the rumor that there is a casting call out around Cleveland for 500 fuzzy pups along with an order for 10 pounds of pork chops strung on a necklace.
Remember, “Only Nixon could go to China.”
