A column in this morning’s AJC reported there are vacancies in the Georgia State Patrol because of low pay. GSP starting pay is less than $18/hr. That’s more than the average pay at the West Point KIA plant, a foreign employer given $100,000 for less than $18/hr jobs. No wonder Georgia is No.1 for business.
GSP positions should be in the H-1B visa program, since they are jobs they can’t be filled by Americans.
Although my opinion may put a temporary, I say temporary, wrinkle in my ongoing respect-fest with Ellynn, here’s an article showing Congress moving forward with girls being required to register with Selective Service.

Bad, bad idea. Call me old-fashioned or even worse, I don’t care. Girls, women, Mamas, aunts, nieces, daughters, school marms and all other forms are to be loved, respected and especially protected!!!! “Respected and protected?” Hmmm, if I had more time, I’d do a Jesse Jackson like rhyme-fest with those words!
I posted an opinion similar to this a few years back at the old site, too. Debbie and one other of my female brethren raked me purdy good! Got a problem? I refer you to my favorite country song to describe ol Noway. Montgomery Gentry’s “You Couldn’t Change Me.”

“Call me old-fashioned…” I think you did a pretty good job of that yourself.
I have no issue with required selective service. In the times of a draft every one needs to step up. Women worked production lines and farmed in WWI. My great aunt was a WAC who served doing logistics for the air transport command. The military has multiple rolls for people. I think of myself at 18- 25 and if drafted I would like to think I would have ended up in a roll suited to my talents. I would hope the powers that be would not threw me into sniper training (I bet I would excel at building demolition). My 3rd cousin is a trained trauma nurse who does triathlons and has great rifle skills. My newly UGA grad goddaughter of less then 18 hours has a degree in microbiology. My 2nd cousin is a mechanical tester for Oshkosh truck. Women at times might like to be protected… but like any other American, we are willing to protect too. “Hell has no furry like a woman scorned” (or royally ticked off).
We don’t need a draft and we don’t need Selective Service registration but if politicians insist on maintaining SS registration than both males and females should be required to register.
With the social issues and world unrest we are having we might need to pull a Swiss movement and make everyone capable go through some period of military discipline.
Compulsory service may work in other countries but not here. It’s too expensive and volunteers are more motivated than draftees.
But they get to carry MP5s around. That is so much cooler than having to hide a revolver under your belly roll.
Gcp, agree, volunteers realize it is a great career but can the compulsory experience be more expensive than the social issues, failures in responsibility at all levels today and the direction the nation is going today ? No. Just spent some time with young military folks and couldn’t think more of them.
BTW after some personal education, I learned the JROTC programs in the high schools are doing more for young folks than I ever imagined, even those not headed to the military.
Look at the federal budget pie chart before you suggest spending more on the military. The volunteer military keeps us in a better brand of soldier than conscripts. While I am for reducing the “Defense” budget I am amenable to keeping current levels of well-trained human assets on hand for defensive capabilities, not more though. The budget should be cut by reducing the multi-billion dollar geegaws like Swiss Army knife planes when a specifically purposed Barlow will suffice. The largest corporate contributors to SuperPACs are in the “Defense” industry though, imagine that.

I am hearing rumblings of Superior Court Judge Jon “Bo” Wood of LMJC is retiring effective October.
Well I wasted about 9 minutes reading up on this.
Apparently someone alleged that she was fired for cursing as a pretext because she didn’t buy into her bosses’ ‘party line’, which, in a military context, has traditionally been the most important thing.
So, rest assured, swearing is probably still OK. Disobeying your superior may still have consequences.
