11Alive Survey Results in on Legalizing Marijuana and Gambling

The results of 11Alive’s latest SurveyUSA opinion poll were released this morning, revealing interesting data on the state’s views on legalizing medical marijuana, recreational marijuana, casino gambling, and pari-mutuel wagering.

On legalizing growing of marijuana for medical purposes, Georgians are in favor at 67%, with a 2.5% margin of error. 23% responded that this should remain illegal, with seniors, “strong Republicans”, and “very conservative” voters being the most likely to oppose legalization, according to the crosstabs.

For the legalization of recreational use of marijuana, the results had more of a split. 42% of voters are in favor of its legalization, with young voters and liberals being the most likely to support recreational use. A larger number however, 48%, believe that it should remain illegal in the state. These results are with a 2.6% margin of error.

When it comes to gambling, a majority of Georgians surveyed were in support of legalizing casino gambling and pari-mutuel wagering.

56% supported casino gambling in Georgia, with 34% opposed. Looking at the crosstabs on this question, Evangelical Christians were split on this issue. However, the non-evangelicals favored overwhelmingly. This is with a 2.6% margin of error.

The final question asked if the individual supported or opposed allowing horse racing and pari-mutuel betting in Georgia to help fund the HOPE scholarship, also with a 2.6% margin of error. A majority would be in support, at 59%, with 29% opposed.

1,650 Georgians were interviewed, 1,454 of them registered to vote. The interviews took place this past Monday and Tuesday, over the home phone, or conducted on a smart phone, tablet, or electronic device.
